AL roundup: Greinke gives up first run in 43 innings

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) " Zack Greinke gave up an earned run for the first time in 43 innings, but Billy Butler backed him with two homers and Kansas City had 11 extra-base hits in an 11-3 rout of Toronto on Wednesday night.

Vernon Wells' RBI single with two outs in the first produced the first earned run off Greinke (5-0) since last September, a span of six starts. After throwing complete-game shutouts his two previous starts, Grienke went seven innings, allowing five hits and two runs with two walks and eight strikeouts. He leads the AL with 44 strikeouts.

His ERA climbed from 0.00 to 0.50.

Butler, hitting .193 when the game began, had two homers, a double, a single and four RBIs. He homered, doubled and homered in three at-bats against left-hander Brian Tallet (1-1), who was charged with 10 runs and 11 hits in four-plus innings.

Yankees 8, Tigers 6

DETROIT (AP) " Nick Swisher hit two homers and Joba Chamberlain gave up a run in seven innings to lead New York.

The Yankees won two straight in Detroit by a combined score of 19-6 after losing the series opener and three in a row at Boston for a season-high four-game skid.

Swisher hit a three-run homer in the seven-run fourth and added a solo shot in the fifth, giving him a team-high seven home runs.

The Tigers scored five runs in the ninth.

Chamberlain (1-0) gave up three hits and three walks while matching a career high for innings pitched.

Rookie Rick Porcello (1-3) allowed a season-high six runs, six hits and three walks while lasting a season-low 3 2-3 innings.

Red Sox 6, Indians 5, 10 innings

CLEVELAND (AP) " Jonathan Van Every hit his first major league home run in the 10th inning to cap Boston's comeback win.

Van Every, who played in the Indians' minor league system from 2000-07, hit a 1-1 pitch from Jensen Lewis (2-3) to center with two outs. Van Every had an RBI single during Boston's three-run rally in the eighth.

Hideki Okajima (2-0) worked the ninth for the win. Jonathan Papelbon pitched the 10th for his sixth save in six opportunities.

The Red Sox have won 12 of 13.

Cleveland led 5-2 going into the eighth, but a crucial fielding error by third baseman Mark DeRosa helped Boston score three runs and tie the game.

Fausto Carmona held Boston to two runs in 6 2-3 innings. He retired 12 straight batters between the second and sixth innings.

Mike Lowell, extending his hitting streak to 13 games, and Jason Varitek had RBI doubles in the sixth.

Twins 8, Rays 3

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) " Nick Blackburn breezed through seven innings, and Minnesota roughed up Scott Kazmir from the start.

Blackburn (2-1) gave up two runs and eight hits and Justin Morneau had three hits, a walk and an RBI for the Twins, who took two of three from the defending AL champions.

Kazmir (3-2) lasted just four innings, the second rough outing in his last three starts. The All-Star lefty gave up eight runs " six earned " and nine hits with four walks and four strikeouts.

The Twins took a 4-0 lead in the first inning, with two runs coming on a bloop single by Jason Kubel and an infield hit by Michael Cuddyer. Kazmir also threw two wild pitches with runners on third, allowing Denard Span and Kubel to score.

The Rays have lost six straight series since taking two of three from Boston to open the season.

Angels 3, Orioles 2

BALTIMORE (AP) " Torii Hunter and Kendry Morales hit consecutive homers off Koji Uehara in the seventh inning and Shane Loux earned his first win since 2003 as Los Angeles swept the two-game series.

Uehara left in the seventh after being struck in the chest by a line drive off the bat of Gary Matthews Jr. After falling to his knees, Baltimore's first Japanese-born player slowly rose to his feet and walked off the field.

The injury was determined to be a bruised sternum. X-rays were negative.

Uehara (2-2) allowed one run and four hits before Hunter led off the seventh with his eighth home run. Morales followed by driving an 0-2 pitch over the center-field wall. One out later, Matthews singled.

Loux (1-2) gave up one run and five hits in six-plus innings for his first victory since Sept. 24, 2003, with Detroit. It was the fourth start of the season for the right-hander, who entered with a 6.61 ERA.

Brian Fuentes got three outs for his fifth save " his second in the series. Los Angeles, which came to town without having won consecutive games, now is on a three-game run.

White Sox 6, Mariners 3

CHICAGO (AP) " Slumping Carlos Quentin and Jermaine Dye hit consecutive home runs in the seventh inning, leading the Chicago White Sox over the Seattle Mariners.

A.J. Pierzynski also homered as the White Sox rallied from a 3-1 deficit and avoided what would have been their first losing April since 2001.

Matt Thornton (1-1) pitched a one-hit seventh in relief of Gavin Floyd. Scott Linebrink followed and Bobby Jenks pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his fifth save in five chances.

Adrian Beltre had four hits and Ken Griffey Jr. hit a two-run double for Seattle, which will lead the AL West at the end of a month for the first time since July 2003.

Shawn Kelley (0-1), who had pitched 7 2-3 scoreless innings over six appearances coming in, relieved Erik Bedard with a 3-1 lead.
