Jeff Barto and Derek Mayer combined to shut down the Sacramento Red

Sox for the Nevada Bighorns summer college baseball team in a 5-1 win

in the opener of a doubleheader on Sunday at Western Nevada College's

John L. Harvey Field.

The Red Sox came back to win the nightcap 4-3.

Barto started on the mound and picked up the win, scattering six hits

while allowing one run. Mayer picked up the save, retiring all six

batters he faced over the last two innings, striking out two.

Eric Maupin went 2-for-3 with an RBI, Jeff Young was 1-for-3 with an

RBI and Jay Skilton doubled for the Bighorns.

In the nightcap, Jeremy Gendlek allowed four runs over five innings

for the Bighorns. Ryan Shepherd pitched a scoreless inning, striking

out one and Maupin also pitched a scoreless inning, striking out one.

Matt Winter hit an RBI triple in the fifth inning to pull the Bighorns

to within 4-1. The Bighorns scored two runs for the final margin in

the seventh.

Zach Shell and Maupin each walked before Shell scored on a throwing

error. Maupin then scored on Adam Anderson's RBI sacrifice fly.

Maupin and Royal Good each added a hit for the Bighorns. Eric Hansen

went 2-for-3 with a two-run triple and pitched three scoreless innings

for the win for the Red Sox.

The Bighorns will conclude their summer season in a series next

weekend against the NorCal Pirates at John L. Harvey Field. The teams

will play a doubleheader, beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday, and at 11 a.m.

Sunday.
