Bail set for school board trustee

Bail for school board trustee Joe Enge, 46, was set at $3,000 cash during an arraignment hearing Friday.

As an additional condition of his release, Judge John Tatro revoked Enge's driving privileges completely.

"You're a danger to the community," Tatro said. "Pursuant to these allegations, you're going to kill somebody."

He ordered Enge to remain drug- and alcohol-free and said he must wear an alcohol monitoring device if released on bail.

Enge was arrested at 2:32 a.m. Thursday on suspicion of probation violation after deputies responded to a domestic dispute at his home on Ridgeway Court.

Although he wasn't there when officers arrived, he was later found at a residence on Muldoon Street. He registered .174 on a breathalyzer test, more than double the legal limit.

Because he pleaded guilty on March 24 to drunken driving on Jan. 29, he was serving a suspended 179-day sentence during which he was prohibited from using drugs or alcohol.

During the arraignment, Enge asked that he be released on his own recognizance. Tatro denied the request.

"You have got to be kidding," Tatro said. "There is absolutely no way I'd release you on your own recognizance. If anything, I would increase your bail. Absolutely no way."

A pretrial hearing was set for 9 a.m. Aug. 19 in Justice Court.

The Carson City School District and school board received a letter of resignation via fax from Enge on Thursday morning.

The letter was written on Enge's behalf by friend and University Regent Ron Knecht, and Enge signed it.

Superintendent Richard Stokes said they are "in a holding pattern."

"We are waiting to see what happens through the legal system," Stokes said. "We want to make sure any decision Mr. Enge makes is legitimate and that it comes through him."
