Danny Tarkanian has announced he will seek the Republican nomination to challenge U.S. Sen. Harry Reid.

Tarkanian, son of former University of Nevada, Las Vegas coach Jerry Tarkanian, is a former candidate for the Nevada Senate and Secretary of State.

Reid, the Democratic majority leader, has announced he will seek a fifth six-year term in office.

Tarkanian, who recently won a $150,000 settlement from State Sen. Mike Schneider in a case charging slander during a campaign that Schneider won, said that battle taught him that, "sometimes you have to stand up against power to affect real change."

Tarkanian pledged to campaign on issues.

"This campaign isn't going to be about personal attacks," he said. "It's going to be about bringing real representation back to the people of Nevada.

"We simply cannot allow our federal government to limitlessly borrow and spend at the expense of future generations of Nevadans," he said. "Government can play a role in this recovery, but it needs to be a limited, effective role."
