ELKO, Nev (AP) - A raucous crowd erupted in protest at the Nevada Wildlife Commission meeting in Elko after commission members proceeded to elect officers without first hearing public comment.

Gerald Lent of Reno was re-elected chairman of the nine-member board. Scott Raine of Eureka was elected vice chairman.

Tom Smith, with the Nevada Coalition for Wildlife, was escorted out of the meeting when he tried to protest the election. Sportsmen and conservation groups complained that Lent changed an earlier agenda that would have allowed public comment before elections were held.

As Smith was led out of the room, he asked anyone opposed to the vote to stand up in protest.

About three-quarters of the 60 people in attendance did so.
