RENO, Nev (AP) - A Truckee Meadows planning board has agreed to adopt an initiative aimed at keeping water resources and regional planning in balance.

More than 70 percent of Washoe County voters approved the initiative in November. The measure calls for city and county master plans to contain policies that balance future land use and water supplies.

A bill to make the initiative state law was vetoed by the governor.

On Thursday, the Truckee Meadows Regional Planning Governing Board agreed to follow the initiative. It also agreed to ask Washoe County to sponsor an amendment to the regional plan containing the changes.

Washoe County Water Resources Director Rosemary Menard expects the county to vote on sponsoring the plan amendment within a month. She says the initiative should be adopted by January.
