A's 3, Yankees 0

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Brett Tomko pitched five scoreless innings to beat New York less than a month after being released by the Yankees, winning his debut with Oakland, 3-0 on Monday night.

Kurt Suzuki and Mark Ellis had RBI hits in a three-run fourth inning against A.J. Burnett (10-6) in the Yankees' second straight loss on this West Coast trip.

Three relievers finished the shutout, the fourth this season against the Yankees, who lead the majors in home runs and are second to the Los Angeles Angels in runs scored.

Tomko (2-2) allowed five hits and one walk, throwing 78 pitches in his first start May 26, 2008, for Kansas City. Tomko started the season in the Yankees' organization and was called up to the majors in May. He went 1-2 with a 5.23 ERA in 15 relief appearances before being designated for assignment on July 21.

The A's signed him to a minor league deal earlier this month and he made three appearances in the minors before getting the start against his former team.

Andrew Bailey pitched a perfect ninth for his 18th save, finishing Oakland's sixth shutout of the season.

Angels 8, Orioles 5

BALTIMORE (AP) - Vladimir Guerrero hit two homers and had five RBIs, Kendry Morales and Maicer Izturis also homered for Los Angeles.

The Angels broke a 2-all tie with three runs in the sixth and three in the seventh.

Izturis broke the tie with a solo shot off rookie David Hernandez (4-5) in the sixth. Guerrero added a two-run drive.

In the seventh, Guerrero hit a three-run homer, his 10th of the season and 402nd for his career. He has 38 career multihomer games.

Ervin Santana (6-6) allowed three runs and seven hits in six innings to win his third straight start. Brian Fuentes got the final out for his 34th save.

The Angels have won six of seven overall and 20 of their last 26 on the road.

Rangers 8, Twins 5

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Marlon Byrd drove in three runs and Texas extended its lead in the AL wild-card race.

After taking two of three over the weekend from Boston, the Rangers stretched their advantage to one game over the idle Red Sox.

Josh Hamilton had two hits and scored twice as he batted third in the Rangers lineup for the first time since July 25. David Murphy added two RBIs for Texas, which led 7-2 after the second.

Tommy Hunter (6-2) won his third straight start, allowing four runs and four hits in 5 2-3 innings.

Minnesota All-Star first baseman Justin Morneau left in the fourth inning after experiencing dizziness. The 2006 MVP came into the game leading the AL with 94 RBIs.

Joe Mauer went 3 for 5 and homered for the Twins, who have lost 12 of 16. He pushed his hitting streak to 14 games and raised baseball's best batting average to .380.

Twins starter Francisco Liriano (5-12) gave up seven runs, tying a career high, and seven hits in two innings.

White Sox 8, Royals 7

CHICAGO (AP) - Scott Podsednik had a go-ahead RBI single in the eighth and A.J. Pierzynski hit a two-run homer in the seventh for Chicago.

With the score tied at 7, Alex Rios drew a leadoff walk from Royals reliever Roman Colon (1-3) in the eighth. After a sacrifice and another out, Podsednik singled off John Bale.

Jayson Nix hit a two-run homer for the White Sox, who are two games behind first-place Detroit in the AL Central.

White Sox starter Mark Buehrle again failed to win for the first time since pitching a perfect game against Tampa Bay on July 23. He has a five-game winless streak. Buehrle allowed four runs and nine hits in six innings.

Scott Linebrink (3-5) gave up a 7-4 lead on a two-out three-run homer by Mike Jacobs in the seventh. It was his 16th and the first pinch-hit homer of the season for the Royals.

Bobby Jenks pitched a scoreless ninth for his 25th save.

Yuniesky Betancourt hit a two-run homer for the Royals, who have lost four of six.
