Rutherdale wins
gold medal
at Junior Olympics
Gardnerville's Jordyn Rutherdale won first place in a Junior Olympic soccer skills test in Chula Vista, Calif. in late July.
Rutherdale qualified for the event by winning a competition last spring at C.C. Meneley Elementary and she followed that up with a win at a regional competition in Reno, which earned her a trip to the national event.
A total of 1.5 million kids aged 8-13 competed in the competition and 72 athletes from 50 states and Puerto Rico reached the finals.
Rutherdale was the only athlete from Nevada, and thus was given the honor of carrying the state flag during the opening ceremonies of the event.
