City phone system malfunctions

The phone system for Carson City offices was not operating properly Friday, causing some calls to be dropped or to ring continuously.

"We are sorry for the inconvenience," Sheriff Ken Furlong said via cell phone from his Musser Street office. "The problem is citywide. Fortunately it is not affecting emergency services, they are on a different system."

City Manager Larry Werner said the troubles began Thursday afternoon, but by 7 p.m. the system was back up and working.

Friday at 7 a.m., however, the system crashed again, he said.

"Our computer network has had a cascading failure and our phone system basically rides on the back of our computer system, plus there are problems with AT&T," he said. "What's really being affected is our internal phone system. We're not getting out. If someone calls it is just going into never-never land and we are getting no indication of calls coming in."

Werner said crews will work through the weekend if need be to repair the issue

by Monday.

By Friday afternoon they were having some success and calls were coming in and going out. The troubles appeared to be sporadic, said Werner.

He said if callers experience a continuous ring, or no ring at all, to try calling back.

"Our guys are working frantically to get this solved," he said.
