Nobody Asked Us, But ... V&T ride was well worth the wait

Hallelujah ... the freeway to Fairview is opening soon. Now all we have to do is get the rest of it done. In the meantime, we have a hot scoop ... you can walk, run and bike the new part of the freeway on Sept. 19 before it opens to traffic. NDOT will be announcing the time and starting place soon. Mark it on your calendar, if you want to be the first to see the new road. Should be fun.

Bob Crowder, a Marine veteran of WWII, tells us of the time he was stationed in New Zealand and was at a dance where all the Army soldiers were strutting around in their dress uniforms with fourrageres (thanks to Sandy at the CC library for the spelling) on their shoulders (those are the colorful cords that wrap around one arm). All the girls were flocking to the soldiers, until an enterprising Marine told his buddy that they meant that soldier had VD. Needless to say, the Marines conquered the Kiwi ladies and each Marine had three or four to choose from. Semper fi!

Bob's wife, Dorothy Crowder, had a birthday last week, and they celebrated their 62nd anniversary in June. How great is that? Lynne Heller and Sarah Nutt Garrett also had birthdays (don't we all?), and Anna Wehling will celebrate tomorrow. Our best to everyone.

Richard Zwadoniak just had a quadruple bypass a couple of weeks ago, and on Sunday was already back ushering at St. Teresa's. Now, that's a great recovery. And we're all glad he's back. Thanks to Margaret Hardeman Montes for lunch at Tito's. Good food, good friend.

Scotty Ruff got this one off the Internet: "While working at a pizza parlor, I observed a man ordering a small pizza to go. The cook asked him if he wanted it cut into four pieces or six. He thought about it and replied, 'Just cut it into four ... I don't think I'm hungry enough to eat six.'" Hmmmm...

Seen at the Farmers Market at 3rd: Barbara Willis and her dad. He's visiting from Seattle, and is in his spry nineties ... so nice. Maggie Marin, Christine King, Donna Brooks and her mother, Vera Schultz, were among the crowd ... lovely ladies all.

Then there was the train ride on Friday night. What a trip! The V&T rides again ... almost to Carson City. For those who doubted, you need to ride the train ... we saw tiny little graveyards in the hills, wild horses, deer, old mines, trees, mountains ... the ride is GORGEOUS. For those of you who said, "Who wants to look at sagebrush?" May we suggest you move back to California or wherever you think it's so wonderful. Our congratulations go out to those who had the foresight and perseverance to see this through, especially the Gray family, for keeping the RR alive all these years.

To many people, it is a dream come true. Thanks to you all. For information, go to 1-800-NEVA

DA1 and get your ride into history. And to the nay sayers ... bah humbug!

Adele's Concert Under the Stars series continues at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 3, with a street fair beginning at 5:30. Call the BAC at 883-1976, or 882-3353 for information and tickets. Frank Taylor (885-7579) tells us that the Sertoma Club is now co-ed. They have meetings every Wednesday at Q's at noon, and raise money for local children with hearing, speech, cancer and diabetes ailments. It's a great cause, a great group, and is open to everyone.

Don't forget to get a flu shot ... it's that time of year again. Wash your hands and stay healthy.
