The man accused of kidnapping Jaycee Lee Dugard 18 years ago in South Lake Tahoe served time in federal and Nevada prisons for the rape and torture of a woman he kidnapped from South Lake Tahoe.
Nevada Division of Parole and Probation chief Bernie Curtis said Thursday that records indicate that in Nov-ember 1976, Phillip Garrido, 58, kidnapped a California woman from a convenience store parking lot in South Lake Tahoe. He took her to a storage shed in Reno where he raped and tortured her over the course of several hours.
Curtis said Garrido left the victim in the unlocked shed where she was found by a Reno police officer on patrol.
"That officer heard her muffled cries and saved her life," Curtis said.
The federal government prosecuted Garrido on the kidnapping charge, while Washoe County prosecuted him on the rape charge, with the sentences to run concurrently, said Curtis.
After serving about 10 years in a federal prison and receiving parole, it appears from the Nevada Parole and Probation records that Garrido was brought to Nevada and served just a few months in a Nevada prison before receiving parole.
He was released on Aug. 26, 1988, and immediately moved to Antioch. After completing the 10-year federal parole, Garrido asked that his lifetime supervision under the Nevada sentencing be transferred to California Parole and Probation. The request was granted, said Curtis.
He said reports submitted to Nevada Parole and Pro-
bation from California Parole and Probation indicated "he was being a successful parolee."
Curtis said it does not appear that Garrido, who at the time of his arrest in 1976 was a musician working in Reno, lived in Nevada after his incarceration.
Where he lived at the time of the arrest is not clear.
Carson City Clerk Recorder marriage records indicate Garrido was married here in March 1973.
Garrido is being held in the El Dorado County Jail in Placerville.
El Dorado County District Attorney Vern Pierson said during a press conference Thursday that he expects to file criminal charges against Garrido and his wife, Nancy, 54, today. The couple will be arraigned this morning.
