Secretary of State takes over business licenses

The Secretary of State's office officially takes over responsibility for issuing Nevada business licenses on Oct. 1.

Secretary of State Ross Miller said the move directed by the 2009 Legislature is the first step in what will eventually become a one-stop shop for companies seeking to relocate in Nevada. The business portal, however, will take time to develop since it will have to connect to all required state agencies and local licensing offices.

AB146 transfers the authority to issue annual business licenses and collect the license fee from the Department of Taxation to the Secretary of State.

Miller said the goal is to make Nevada the gold standard for providing business services in the nation.

"The consolidation of the business license program with the other services my office provides is the first step toward creating an online service like no other state offers," he said.

Effective Oct. 1, businesses will be able to apply, pay their license fee and receive that license online at www.nvsos.gov. More information on the process is available on that site under the Licensing Center tab.
