The Governmental Services Tax on some vehicle registrations and renewals will increase effective Sept. 1.
The GST is added to Nevada's basic $33 per year registration fee.
The 2009 Legislature changed the yearly depreciation schedule used to calculate vehicle registration taxes. A 1-year-old vehicle will now be taxed at 95 percent of its original price instead of 85 percent.
For cars two to eight years old, the tax rate will stay the same as last year, rather than decrease 10 percent for depreciation as it has in the past. The 10-percent depreciation reduction will resume for them when they renew next year.
But owners of vehicles nine years and older will see their tax amount increase when they renew after Sept. 1. Lawmakers raised the minimum tax rate from 5 percent to 15 percent and increased the minimum amount of tax to $16 from $6 a year.
Different rates apply to commercial vehicles and trucks.
