Senior center to distribute meals today

The Carson City Senior Citizens Center will distribute shelf-stable meals to seniors on Dec. 3, Dec. 17 and Jan. 7.

Each distribution is 12:30-3:30 p.m. at the senior center at 911 Beverly Drive (east entrance).

Up to 300 seniors, ages 60 and older or the spouse of someone 60 years and older, will receive a one-time distribution of a box of 10 shelf-stable meals. Those not already registered at the Carson City Senior Citizens Center may be asked to fill out a simple form.

The meals, which can be stored in cabinets without refrigeration for two years and do not have to be heated (but taste better hot), were purchased with a grant from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Meals include chicken and dumplings, spaghetti and meatballs, and beef stew, plus a beverage and dessert.

The meals will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis while the supply lasts.

Couple spending extra hours donating meat, bread

Long-time volunteers Jack and Linda Gorden will be putting in extra hours distributing meat and bread for those in need from 10-11 a.m. Saturday at the Dayton Food Bank, 170 Pike St.

Dayton Food Bank organizer Freida Carbery said that Jack and Linda Gorden devote many hours each week gathering bread donations from area businesses for the food bank.

The couple is also spearheading a new community project under the name Dayton Valley Elves, in cooperation with other individuals and groups such as Dayton Senior Center which has the "Santa for Seniors" project of collecting gifts for seniors in the Dayton to Silver Springs areas who would not otherwise have Christmas gifts.

Christmas train starting Saturday

The historic V&T Railroad is running a very special limited service for the upcoming Christmas holiday starting this Saturday and then every Saturday in December until Christmas.

The "Christmas Elves Train O' Lights" is a great way to experience a truly memorable family event as you ride the railway used during the Comstock mining boom of the 1860s. The century old railcars will be decked out with festive lights and decorations as passengers take a journey through time along with Santa's elves.

Father Christmas himself (a Civil War era Santa) will be riding on the Dec. 19 train on his way to the inaugural Dickens Festival in Virginia City.
