Food bank eligibility meeting is Dec. 17

The Food Bank of Northern Nevada will be helping people determine if they are eligible for food stamps.

The event starts at

3 p.m. on Dec. 17 at the Dayton Community Center, 170 Pike St. Those are eligible also can be recertified for welfare at the event.

To help determine your eligibility, bring: Identification for all who are apply, including Social Security cards for children; proof of all income; proof of rent or mortgage and utility costs, proof of out-of-pocket medical costs if over 65 years of age.

All items must be current.

Meal distribution postponed until Jan.

The distribution of emergency shelf-stable meals for seniors originally scheduled for Dec. 17 at the Carson City Senior Citizens Center has been canceled due to problems receiving the shipment.

The distribution from 12:30-3:30 p.m. Jan. 7 will go on as planned at the senior center at 911 Beverly Drive east entrance.

The meal distribution is for seniors 60 years and older, and their spouses. Each person can receive a distribution of 10 shelf-stable meals, which do not require refrigeration and can be eaten with or without heating.

GOP reservations due Saturday

Ring in the Holiday Season with the Carson City Republican Women at their annual Christmas Party on Tuesday. Doors open at

6 p.m. and a buffet dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m., upstairs at the Carson Nugget.

This special meeting will feature officer installation by Lynne Hartung, president of the Nevada Federation of Republican Women.

The cost is $20 per person and reservations may be made by calling Judith Wakefield at 882-6842 by Saturday. Wear your holiday finery and bring a new, unwrapped gift for a little girl or boy. The gifts will be donated by our Caring for America committee to Advocates to End Domestic Violence.

Candidate for governor to speak at women's party

Rory Reid, Democratic candidate for governor, will appear at the Carson City Democratic Women's Club annual Holiday party, which begins at noon Saturday at Grandma Hattie's restaurant.

Funds will be raised at the party to support the Western Nevada College scholarship awarded yearly by the club. The cost for the party and holiday feast buffet is $15. For reservations, call Joan at 882-5709.

Coat vouchers available

Friends In Service Helping is partnering with Burlington Coat Factory and 35 co-sponsoring schools, churches, service clubs and businesses in collecting coats and distributing them by issuing FISH coat vouchers to any person needing a warm winter coat in Carson City or Lyon, Douglas and Storey counties.

FISH has mailed 1,200 coat vouchers to schools, churches, businesses and service clubs in the counties to be given to needy children, seniors or anyone else in need of a coat.

To help, donate lightly used coats at FISH locations or, anyone receiving coat vouchers may present them at FISH locations in the following areas:

• 138 E. Long St., Carson City

• 1231 Service Dr., Gardnerville

• 10126A Highway 50 E., Mound House

Extended jobless benefits available Saturday

(AP) - Unemployed Nevadans who exhausted their jobless benefits will begin receiving extended benefits recently approved by Congress this weekend.

Gov. Jim Gibbons says more than 6,000 residents qualify and pre-registered with the Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation to receive extended assistance, the fourth extension approved since the recession began.

The latest extension is retroactive to the week of Nov. 14.
