Dayton 52, Coleville 29

The Dust Devils were spurred by the 3-point shot with Kathie Arias leading the way with four 3-pointers and 21 points. Ariella Ruybal kicked in two 3-pointers and added 13 points.

Dayton started off slow thanks to several missed layups, but were able to pull ahead and get some seldom used players on the court. Seven Dust Devils scored in the game and coach Shari Andreasen said the team was able to work on offensive discipline later in the game.

Spanish Springs Invitational

Carson 64, Gridley 41

Thanks to a big second half, the Senators improved to 4-0 with an easy win over Gridley in the opening round of the Spanish Springs Invitational.

The Senators will play Spanish Springs tonight at 6 p.m. in the semifinals. Spanish Springs defeated Atwater in its opening game.

Carson led by a 26-24 margin at the half, and coach Todd Ackerman wasn't pleased with the first 16 minutes.

Carson, thanks to some great defense and the scoring of Whitney Nash and Gina Bianchi, outscored Gridley 22-7 in the third quarter to take a 48-31 lead. Nash had seven of her team-high 15 and Bianchi had five of her 13 in that span.

"We did not play a very good first half," Ackerman said. "We picked up a little more all over the floor and forced them to use their weak hand. They had a bunch of turnovers that led to easy baskets."

Carson, which had seven different players score in the final period, outscored Gridley 16-10.

"They (Gridley) kept battling," Ackerman said. "They didn't go away. We applied the pressure the first three minutes of the quarter and then backed off."

Tiana McAllister-Daggs added eight points for Carson, while Yvonne Hollett, Eliza Matley and Elayna Shine each added six.

Ackerman doesn't doubt tonight's game will be much tougher.

"They pressure a little which I think we can handle," Ackerman said. "They have two big girls inside, and if we can contain them, we have a very good chance to win the game."
