Pack falls on road again

LAS VEGAS - Jimmer Fredette scored a career-high 33 points and Jackson Emery added 27 to lead BYU to a 110-104 win over Nevada in the third round of the Hoop TV Las Vegas Classic on Tuesday at the Orleans Arena.

This was the Cougars' biggest offensive output against a Division I opponent since a 110-69 win over Morgan State on Dec. 28, 1995. Nevada's 104 points were the second-most of the year for the Wolf Pack, while this season marks the first time since 1997-98 that the team has topped the century mark twice in the same year. The Wolf Pack turned in a season-high 112 points in its 112-99 win over Houston on Nov. 21.

Fredette was 11 of 16 from the field and 9 of 9 from the free-throw line. Fredette, who had six assists, was held scoreless for the game's first 9 minutes.

Emery, who also scored a career high, was 9 of 13 from the field and 5 of 7 from 3-point range for BYU (11-1), which scored 64 second-half points and was 27 of 28 from the free-throw line.

Armon Johnson led Nevada (6-5) with 30 points and five assists. He was 13 of 21 from the field. It marked Johnson's second career 30-point game and was three points shy of his career best of 33 last year vs. California. It is the most points for a Wolf Pack player this season and Johnson's fourth time as Nevada's leading scorer this year.

Dario Hunt added 21 points along with nine rebounds. Luke Babbitt added 20 points and six rebounds.

Tyler Haws added 18 points on 6 of 6 from the field and free-throw line for BYU.

After trailing 50-46 at halftime, the Cougars took the lead on Hawes' three-point play with 14:17 left, 63-62. The lead grew to as many as 10 twice late in the second half before a late Wolf Pack run that cut the lead to 102-98 with under a minute to play.

Nevada plays the Tulsa at 5 p.m. today in the consolation game.

NOTES: The Wolf Pack is still looking for its first win away from Lawlor Events Center and is 0-5 away from home this season (0-1 in neutral-site games)...That marked the second time this season that Nevada has had three players with at least 20 points in the same game...Nevada outrebounded BYU 29-26, marking the sixth consecutive game that the Wolf Pack has outrebounded its opponent and the eighth time in nine contests. The team is now 5-3 when outrebounding its opponent this season. Hunt just missed his second career double-double with a game-high nine rebounds, while Babbitt pulled down six boards ... Nevada shot 58.8 percent from the field in the game, the fourth time in five contests that the team has topped 50 percent.
