LAS VEGAS - Valley outscored Carson by six points in the second half, and that was the margin of victory in Valley's 51-45 win over the Senators at the Las Vegas Tournament Tuesday afternoon.

The loss dropped Carson to 7-5 overall heading into next Tuesday's Sierra League game at Wooster.

"We played well today," Carson coach Bruce Barnes said. "This was the toughest opponent we've played yet. They lost to Legacy by one. They like to run up and down the floor.

"We handled their pressure. Brian (Barnes) and Andrew (Johnson) did a good job of bringing it up. We held their leading scorer to eight points."

Valley outshot Carson at the line, making 17 freebies compared to just nine for Carson. Carson cut Valley's lead to three with 1:10 to go, but was forced to foul.

Brian Barnes led Carson with 17 points and Johnson added 11. Reserve center Matt Cooper added nine.

3 WRESTLERS REACH

SECOND DAY

RENO - Three Carson High wrestlers have reached the second day of the prestigious Sierra Nevada Classic Tuesday at the Reno Livestock Events Center.

Nick Schlager posted a 3-0 mark at 135 pounds and reached the quarterfinals. He had one pin and two decisions, the latter a 14-7 win over an opponent from Green Valley.

"Nick wrestled awesome," Carson coach Tim McCarthy said. "He was down 5-0. The kid he beat from Gren Vall;ey he will probably see at state."

Pat Craugh (103) came back from a 9-2 deficit to score nine points in the final minute to beat his Oregon opponent 11-10. Craugh was 3-1 on the day.

The diminutive Craugh got a takedown and 3-point near fall to trim the lead to 9-7 and then he tilted his opponent twice worth two points each time to get the dramatic win.

"The kid was trying to coast and hang on to a lead," McCarthy said of Craugh's last opponent.

The final Carson wrestler to survive the first day was 145-pound Nicolas Garcia, who also posted a 3-1 mark. Garcia was supposed to wrestle last night, but his scheduled opponent had already wrestled five times, the max under high school rules.

Cole McCarthy posted a 3-2 record at 112 pounds and Ryan Hoskins was 2-2 at 215. The Senators were without several wrestlers, including 171-pound Junior Valladares.

Action begins today at 9 a.m.

CARSON GIRLS GO 0-2

LAS VEGAS - Carson lost two games Tuesday at the Centennial Holiday Tournament, dropping decisions to Schurr (54-36) and host Centennial (85-38).

Carson, 1-3 in the tournament thus far, concludes play today at 11:45 a.m. against Pahrump.

Carson led by six midway through the second quarter, but Schurr bounced back and grabbed a 26-24 lead. Schurr outscored Carson 28-12 in the second half en route to the easy win.

"We self destructed," Carson coach Todd Ackerman. "They didn't do anything special. At one point we turned the ball over three or four times in a row."

The Centennial game was over early. Centennial unleashed a man-to-man press on Carson. Even though the Senators handled the pressure well, they still trailed 40-13 at the half.

"They got us into a game that was too fast for us," Ackerman said. "We couldn't slow them down. We played hard. That is the best team we've faced. It was a good game for us. I don't like getting pounded, but it will make us a better team."

Gina Bianchi led Carson with 10 points and Nash added nine.
