Budget, Enge's future on school board agenda

Budget cuts and the future of one board member are among the topics to be discussed at tonight's Carson City School Board meeting.

Members of the board plan to take action on the committee assignments of trustee Joe Enge, who was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving in the early morning hours of Jan 31.

Although the board does not have the power to remove any members, President Barbara Howe said she would like to see some sort of recourse.

Although he was twice convicted of DUIs in 1997, under Nevada law those will not count against him because he did not receive any convictions in the last seven years.

As a first-time offender, Enge could face two days to six months in jail and a fine of $340 to $1,175. His driver's license also could be suspended for 90 days.

Enge has said he plans to seek treatment, but does not plan to resign his position.

Also at the meeting, Superintendent Richard Stokes will outline potential plans for cutting this year's budget.

Although the Legislature has not yet determined how much will be cut, Gov. Jim Gibbons has suggested reductions of up to 34 percent.

Stokes said he plans to present a variety of possibilities and allow students, staff and community members to participate in the process.
