Gardnerville woman's son killed in Iraq

The son of Gardnerville resident Sally Wiley was reported killed in action in As-Salam, Iraq, on Feb. 15.

Army Sgt. Sean Darrell Diamond, 41, was on a patrol when his vehicle was hit by two improvised explosive devices.

In a note to friends, Wiley said Diamond was taken to the nearest medical center, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Diamond was serving with the 610th Engineer Support Company, 14th Engineering Battalion, Fort Lewis, Wash. This was his third tour of combat duty.

Born March 17, 1967, he joined the Army after leaving college in the late 1980s, then remained in the reserves. He volunteered to take part in Operation Iraqi Freedom. He helped clean up the Abu Ghurayb prison and worked with Iraqi contractors in Kuwait to rebuild bridges.

His mother has been an active member of the Sierra Blue Star Moms in Douglas County. Wiley was the group's liaison for The Record-Courier's annual Christmas card collection for veterans.

Wiley left for Fort Lewis, Wash., on Monday to await the return of her son.

Diamond is survived by his mother and stepfather, Michael; wife Loramay and their four children, Taylor, Madison, Sean Riley and Athena; his twin brother Michael; brother Jason and father Jerry.
