Alan Glover has knocked himself out skiing, dislocated his shoulder at a football game and broke his leg playing basketball.

The Carson City clerk-recorder injured himself for the first time as a city official last week, however, when he fell ice skating and broke his right shoulder.

"I probably should take up golf again," Glover said.

His 10-person staff and wife, Harle, have been understanding and helpful, he said, but working with his right arm in a sling has been annoying.

Glover, who is right-handed, clerks city meetings and manages city records, elections and the marriage bureau.

Jerry Lynn Ide, chief deputy recorder, said Glover is doing his job well despite being forced to be a lefty. She admitted making fun of him whenever he struggles to do things with one hand.

"He's actually got a real good sense of humor about it," she said.

Glover, 59, was ice skating with his wife and two grandchildren Dec. 30 at the Arlington Square Ice Rink downtown when he tripped and fell.

He said he knew immediately he had dislocated his shoulder. His wife took him to the emergency room, where he described his pain as an 8 on a scale of 1 to 10.

"They said, 'Maybe we should give you a shot,' and I said, "I think that would be a good idea.'"

He will know soon if he needs surgery, he said.

Tammy Westergard, city business office deputy director, said Glover's broken bone is the first she's heard of at the rink since it opened Dec. 4.

She said she was sorry to hear that Glover was hurt, but was proud of him for going to the rink.

"What a stud for being out there," she said.
