A mouse story which is true: Two little brothers and their sister became the owners of a small squirrel cage with a wheel for the squirrel to play in. It got set aside on the top shelf of the pantry for a long time, its cage door swinging on hinges of a wiry, brassy kind. A few nights ago, hearing a creaking noise in the pantry, the mother of the little girl and her brothers went in there with a light and were surprised to see a mouse running in the wheel. It was stealing a ride, all by himself and all for fun!

Hank Vaughn is coming, one of the most picturesque characters of the Northwest is on his way to Carson. Vaughn is what is known as a "squaw man." He married an Indian woman in order to take up a track of rich wheat land in the Unstillia reservation. Socially Vaughn is a Jekyll and Hyde.
