A 70-year-old Carson City man was sentenced to up to 10 years in prison on Monday for coercing an 8-year-old neighbor girl into performing lewd acts in May.
William C. Greene apologized to the victim and her family before Judge Todd Russell gave Greene more than the defense's request of two to five years but less than the prosecution request of eight to 20.
"The state asks you to think about the victim. The victim in this case is an 8-year-old girl who had her innocence stolen by Mr. Greene," said Deputy District Attorney Melanie Porter.
Porter referred to a psychological evaluation of Greene in which the doctor noted Greene was a danger.
"He appears to be unwilling to recognize his moral flaws," Porter read from the report. "He's unwilling to assume any responsibility for the activities that occurred."
She also pointed to Greene's wife's letter to the court in which the woman noted that in 1984 her husband had similar allegations brought against him in Florida.
"Mr. Greene is not somebody who is safe in the community. He is a risk, particularly because he's unwilling to admit it," said Porter. "No community is safe with Mr. Greene in it. "
Judge Russell said he was particularly disturbed by the psychologist's assessment that Greene was "as close to a designation of high risk to reoffend" as one could get.
"I think your conduct was egregious. I think you do present a risk," said Russell. "My main concern is for the children in our community."
According to court records, in May 2008, Greene lived in the same apartment complex on Saliman Road as the child when he brought the girl into a storage locker on his balcony.
Greene is eligible for parole in four years.
