We see that Charter TV has upped the prices again in order to give us "better television (or something like that)." We don't want "better television," unless we can pick and choose our own preferences. Apparently, "better television" means more reality shows, six or seven commercials between breaks in programming, never ending political commentary, Paris Hilton, arena football, and a litany of "paid" programs for knives and ab builders. Whoopee. When will WE get to pick "better television (or negotiate for lower prices)?" Don't hold your breath.

D'Vine Wine, 200 N. Stewart St., is holding it's ever popular "speed dating" event tonight beginning at 6:30 p.m. Tonight's "ages" are 39-51 for women, and 41-53 for men. If either group wants a "sweet young thing," tonight's not the night. They also have good food, music, and a grand array of wines.

Congratulations to Warden Bill Donat on his retirement. Bill appeared in a play with Maizie ("A Sunny Morning") in 1977 ... it was such a horrific experience, he had to go to Nepal with the Peace Corps for two years to shake it off. But, we're not going to let him forget it! Enjoy the time off, Bill.

Judy Lowther told us about an old lady who got her hair done every week with earphones in her ears. The stylist asked her if she would take out the earphones, but the old lady told her, "No, if I do that I'll die." The stylist thinks that's a crock, so asks her again, but gets the same reply. A short time later, the old lady starts to snooze, and the hairdresser thinks "I'll just take these out for a minute, so I can trim around her ears." She does ... and the lady dies. Horrified, the woman picks up the earphones, puts them to her ears, and hears, "Breathe in, breathe out..."

Happy Anniversary wishes go out to Eileen and Paul Paloolian on their 65th wedding anniversary (and they said it wouldn't last). They will be celebrating this week with a family dinner including children, grandchildren and great grandchildren (is there a place in CC big enough?). Then Bettye and Geri Ruggeri will celebrate their 50th by renewing their vows. Is she a saint or what (50 years with Geri)? Congratulations to all. Then, if that was not enough, the following people are celebrating birthdays: Ronni Hanniman, Larry Wright and Father Edgar Perez-Villanueva of St. Teresa's. All older, but better, we're sure.

Carolyn went to a retreat at Galilee (Lake Tahoe, not Israel) last weekend, and was asked whom she would like to have a conversation with if she could. She replied, "Cleopatra," and Connie Fronapfel said, "I thought you WERE her ... wouldn't you be talking to yourself?"
