Carson, other Sierra Nevada airports could benefit from federal stimulus package

The Carson City Airport and other area aviation facilities may be in line for millions in funding from the economic stimulus package working its way through Congress.

That news was presented at the Northern Nevada Development Authority's breakfast meeting Wednesday at the Gold Dust West. The topic was general aviation's economic benefits.

"There could very well be, in the next 120 days, a lot of activities at airports doing reconstruction," said Steve Tackes, the attorney representing Carson City Airport. Tackes said, promoters of the stimulus bill are looking for "shovel-ready" infrastructure projects that can spend the money quickly.

"The opportunity window will open quickly and close quickly, too," Tackes said.

"General aviation is a catalyst for economic growth, and supports about a half-million jobs throughout the country," said Jim Braswell, former manager of the Minden Tahoe Airport.

According to economic development consultant Mike Licciardello, every dollar invested in a general aviation airport creates $2.50 in economic benefit for the community.

"Every successful county has at least one successful, positive, ongoing general aviation airport," said Ron Weisinger, NNDA executive director.

Braswell outlined other uses for airports, besides general transportation, including agricultural spraying, firefighting, search and rescue, and Civil Air Patrol. Businesses supported by airport operations include fuel sales, aircraft maintenance, air taxi and charter companies, flight training and others.

"These are the very vital backbone for the safety and security of our communities," Braswell said.

For airports like Carson City, 95 percent of the funds for improvements come from the Federal Aviation Administration, with the rest coming from local funds. However, Braswell said the stimulus funds could help get many projects started right away.

"For those looking for business opportunities, you should look to the airport," Tackes said.
