Wicker captures
NNJGA event
Douglas High senior Thomas Wicker shot a three-under par 69 at Washoe Golf Course on recently to win the NNJGA City Junior Championship by five strokes.
The win brought his NNJGA stroke average to 72.3, qualifying him to represent Nevada at the Boys Americas Cup Team Matches. Wicker and Galena High senior Andrew Mims will join two players from Southern Nevada to make up the Nevada team.
Wicker's round included many ups and downs on the way to shooting 69. After bogeying the first hole, Wicker birdied 3,4 and 7 to shoot a two-under 34 on the front nine. He then missed putts from inside four feet on 10 and 11, and bogeyed the par-5 14th.
With his score at even par, Wicker made a charge on the last three holes, chipping in on holes 16 and 18 to finish birdie-par-eagle.
The 69 is Wicker's lowest since he shot a 68 at Wolf Run in March.
2 locals barely miss
qualifying for Open
Two area golfers missed qualifying for the U.S. Senior Open golf tournament by a single stroke on Monday.
Jeff Duncan of Carson City and Michael Paul of Reno fired 3-over-par rounds of 75 during sectional qualifying at Thunder Canyon Golf Club in Washoe Valley.
Dennis Webb, an amateur from Beaumont, Texas, shot a 74 to claim the site's one berth into the U.S. Senior Open on July 30 through Aug. 2 at Crooked Stick Golf Club in Carmel, Ind.
Duncan, however, still has an outside chance of playing in the Open as a first alternate.
