I received a letter recently stating the funding for the Community Counseling Center has been affected by the economic woes. I don't often take the opportunity to talk frankly about a growing issue within our community. Looking at the continued increase in teen and young adult substance abuse and addiction, I realized many parents do not know where they can turn. Services provided by the Community Counseling Center are essential for assisting in counseling, educational resources for parents, and treatment in Carson City. We do not have many resources in Carson City to address this growing problem.
You can be the difference, and you, as the parent, are the first line of defense. A couple years ago I provided information on how to purchase a drug testing kit from the Community Counseling Center.
I had several parents say that made a huge difference. When they knew teens were on drugs, they could more effectively deal with the issue.
These parents purchased a drug kit for only $4 and explained to their youths that, if necessary, they would use them. What was more interesting is that I had a young man tell me that the article was "B.S." and why did I tell parents where to get those tests. His parent purchased a drug test kit because of that article and said, "Look we will test you."
I can say he is doing well, and congratulate his parents for openly dealing with the issue and diligently watching for the warning signs of drug use. This act of prevention can catch and address abuse early on in the process.
The Community Counseling Center has resources available and information designed to help parents see the warning signs of all types of substance abuse and addiction. Ask for help. Do not be embarrassed or question how this occurred. The reality is you can save a life by being informed.
Carson City needs the Community Counseling Center.
It is a valuable, and the sole resource providing preventive measures for our community and actual treatment. Without this resource, the community will be paying more to fight drug-related crime, to assist families in chaos, and to prosecute teens for driving under the influence, possession, use, and theft, resulting in more teen and young adult incarcerations.
Donations to the Community Counseling Center are utilized to assist the wellness of our community as a whole. If you would like to donate or purchase a drug test, please contact the following:
