Six Mile Canyon Road closed next week
Six Mile Canyon Road between Mark Twain and Virginia City will be closed next week for paving and resurfacing work.
Cherie Nevin, Storey County assistant director of communications/emergency management, said that depending on the speed in which the asphalt sets, the city hopes to open the road on weekends and possibly late evenings and very early mornings during the week.
Work began on the project July 13.

Toastmasters install new officers
On Tuesday, the Kit Carson Toastmasters Club installed new club officers.
The newly appointed officers are: Frank Taylor, president; Michael Bish, vice-president of education; Joseph Spencer, vice-president of membership; Scott Fahrenbruch, vice-president of public relations; Leslie Medeiros, treasurer; Christina Slade, secretary; and Fred Daniels, sergeant-at-arms.
Kit Carson Toastmasters Club meets at 6:30 a.m. every Tuesday at Grandma Hattie's Restaurant. The purpose of Toastmasters is to improve public speaking, communication and leadership skills. Karson Kruzers dance, show-n-shine
The Karson Kruzers and the Carson Nugget will host one of two summer street dances and show-n-shines at 6 p.m. today in the Nugget's west parking lot.
McClain's Mobile Music will provide music from 7-11 p.m.
Vehicles may start arriving at 6 p.m., and the show is open to all vehicles. Awards will be presented at 9:30 p.m.

BLM Advisory Council to meet Wednesday
A meeting of the U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Land Management-Nevada Sierra Front-Northwestern Great Basin Resource Advisory Council will be held at 8 a.m. Wednesday at the BLM-Carson City District Office, 5665 Morgan Mill Road at Deer Run Road.
Members of the public are cordially invited to attend.
The agenda will include a field trip to various public land sites in Storey and Washoe County starting at 11:30 a.m. and returning to the CCDO by 5:30 p.m.
Members of the public are also invited to participate on the field trip, but they will need to provide their own transportation and lunch.
Topics of discussion will include updates on the revised BLM-Nevada wild horse and burro program strategy, wind energy project proposals, river restoration projects along the Truckee River and BLM stimulus projects.
BLM also will present a National Making a Difference Award to BLM volunteers Don and Joanne Murray of Spanish Springs for their efforts in the agency's Archaeological Site Stewardship Program.

Rafting trip for Alzheimer's is July 25
Alzheimer's disease affects millions of people. It tears apart families and does not care who it attacks. Help fight this disease and have a great time.
American Home Companion is sponsoring a rafting trip down the American River July 25 to raise funds for the Alzheimer's Association. The group will leave from Gardnerville at 7 a.m.
There is room for 24 people, so get your reservations in soon. Cost is $75, with all proceeds going to the Alzheimer's Association. The rafting guides are all experienced and volunteering their time and equipment.
American Home Companion is also looking for people interested in joining their team for the the Memory Walk July 26.

Dog training classes begin Tuesday
Need help in establishing good conduct and curbing bad habits in your canine friend?
The next dog obedience class taught by Guy Yeaman begins 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Fuji Park Exhibit Hall and is every Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. for the following six weeks.
Cost for the class is $75. Each dog needs a training collar and leash. Dogs must be at least four months old and current on their shots. For information or to register, call 265-4530.
