NL roundup: Werth's homer gets Phillies extra-inning win

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Jayson Werth hit a three-run homer with two outs in the 13th inning to send Philadelphia to its 10th straight victory, 4-1 over Chicago on Tuesday night.

The NL East-leading Phillies are on their longest winning streak in 18 years. They won 13 straight from July 30 to Aug. 12, 1991.

Jimmy Rollins homered and the Phillies got another strong outing from Joe Blanton, who allowed one run in seven innings. Four relievers threw six hitless innings. Clay Condrey (6-2) tossed a perfect inning to earn the win.

Jeff Samardzija (0-1) retired the first two batters he faced before walking Ryan Howard and Raul Ibanez. Werth hit his 21st homer.

Chicago's Rich Harden gave up one run and four hits, striking out six in seven innings.

Kosuke Fukudome's RBI double in the fourth tied it at 1.

Dodgers 12, Reds 3

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Rafael Furcal hit a two-run homer and drove in four runs and Matt Kemp added a two-run shot as Los Angeles got its 11th consecutive home victory over Cincinnati.

Manny Ramirez was hit on the side of his left hand by a pitch from Homer Bailey leading off the third inning. He went to a hospital for precautionary X-rays, which were negative. He is listed as day to day.

The NL West-leading Dodgers (60-34) won their fourth straight and are 26 games over .500 for the first time since 1991.

Randy Wolf (5-4) gave up four runs and two hits in 7 1-3 innings and had two hits, including an RBI double.

Ramirez had a two-run triple in the first that made it 2-0.

The Dodgers took a 4-1 lead in the second on Kemp's two-run homer off Bailey (1-2). He allowed eight hits and nine runs, six earned, in 2 2-3 innings.

Marlins 3, Padres 2

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Chris Volstad pitched seven strong innings to lead Florida.

The Padres had only five singles until rookie Kyle Blanks hit Leo Nunez's first pitch of the ninth inning for his first major league homer.

Hanley Ramirez had three of Florida's 12 hits.

The Padres, who have the second-worst record in the NL, dropped to 12-32 since June 1, the worst in the majors in that stretch.

Volstad (7-9) held the Padres to one run and four singles, with four walks and two strikeouts.

Chad Gaudin (4-9) allowed three runs and nine hits in six innings. He struck out three and walked two.

Florida tied it at 1 in the second on John Baker's double down the left-field line and went ahead in the third on Jorge Cantu's RBI single, then added Jeremy Hermida's sacrifice fly in the fifth.

Astros 11, Cardinals 6

HOUSTON (AP) - Carlos Lee's grand slam was one of Houston's three homers.

The Astros led 5-1 before Lee's shot in the seventh inning. It was his second grand slam of the season and his second straight day with a home run.

Geoff Blum followed Lee's home run with his own to push Houston's lead to 10-1.

Hunter Pence added a two-run homer and Miguel Tejada drove in three runs to help the Astros beat the NL-Central leading Cardinals for the second straight night.

Astros starter Wandy Rodriguez (10-6) allowed four hits and one run in seven innings.

Mark DeRosa had solo homers in the second and eighth innings and Ryan Ludwick added a three-run shot in the Cardinals' five-run eighth.

Todd Wellemeyer (7-8) allowed seven hits and five runs in 4 1-3 innings for St. Louis.

Diamondbacks 6, Rockies 5

DENVER (AP) - Miguel Montero singled and scored the tying run in the seventh inning and then hit a two-run homer in the eighth for Arizona.

Mark Reynolds began the decisive rally with a one-out single off reliever Juan Rincon (1-1). Montero followed with his eighth homer of the season that gave the Diamondbacks a 6-4 lead.

Pinch-hitter Ryan Spilborghs tripled to pull the Rockies within a run in the eighth.

Juan Gutierrez (2-2) picked up the win with an inning of scoreless relief. Chad Qualls got four outs for his 18th save.

Aaron Cook, bidding for a seventh consecutive winning decision, went 6 1-3 innings and gave up eight hits and four runs, the last of which evened the score at 4-all.

Braves 8, Giants 1

ATLANTA (AP) - Martin Prado had three hits and scored three runs, and Brian McCann hit a three-run homer and drove in four runs for Atlanta.

The Braves have averaged 7.2 runs in a 5-1 start to their eight-game homestand and are 9-3 in their last 12 games overall.

The Giants, who fell out of the NL wild-card lead with Monday night's 11-3 loss to the Braves, have lost five of six.

Prado singled and scored on McCann's double in the first, and added another single in the three-run third. Chipper Jones had a run-scoring double, Garret Anderson had a sacrifice fly and Escobar added an RBI single in the inning.

The Braves added four runs off Ryan Sadowski (2-2) in the fourth on an RBI single by Prado and McCann's three-run homer.

Derek Lowe (9-7) allowed seven hits and one run in six innings. The Giants scored in the fifth on Juan Uribe's RBI single.

Brewers 2, Pirates 0

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Braden Looper allowed four hits over seven innings and Prince Fielder had two two-out RBI singles for Milwaukee.

Last-place Pittsburgh, which snapped a 17-game losing streak to the Brewers on Monday, was shut out for the ninth time this season.

Looper (9-4) won his fourth consecutive decision and for the fourth time in his past five starts. He walked three - one intentionally - and had one strikeout.

Trevor Hoffman earned his 22nd save by retiring the side in order in the ninth.

Fielder, whose 86 RBIs is second in the AL, drove in Craig Counsell in the fifth and in the seventh.

Virgil Vasquez (1-4) lost his fourth consecutive start since winning his Pirates debut June 26. He allowed two runs and nine hits.

Nationals 4, Mets 0

WASHINGTON (AP) - John Lannan threw his first career shutout, scattering seven hits for Washington.

Lannan (7-7) did not walk a batter and stuck out one, getting 17 groundball outs. He did not give up an extra-base hit and only once allowed a runner to reach second base, when he gave up two singles in the third.

New York has been shut out five times in its last 13 games and seven times in 26 games since Carlos Beltran went on the DL on June 22. The Mets have been blanked nine times this year, tying Atlanta and the Chicago White Sox for the major league lead.

Washington snapped a six-game losing streak and gave interim manager Jim Riggleman his first win in six games since replacing the fired Manny Acta at the All-Star break.

Oliver Perez (2-3) gave up four earned runs in six innings, walking six and hitting a batter.

Wil Nieves' RBI single in the fourth gave the Nationals a 2-0 lead.
