Ruling against coffee shop owner was wrong
This concerns the recent decision made by the state board of health to deny June Joplin the right to have her "Small Cat" inside Comma Coffee. Their decision was completely wrong and biased.
I have been a loyal customer for over a year, and Small Cat has never caused any sort of harm to anyone, nor has Small Cat been anything short of beneficial for other Comma Coffee patrons. But, according to the board officials who made this decision, they simply don't care; it's not their problem. Well, once again, we have shallow bureaucrats at their finest.
Joplin is an excellent entrepreneur; the state health board has absolutely no right to tell her how to run her own business. If Roger Works is such an animal lover or a veterinarian, he should have stuck up for the patrons instead of worrying about his wife's opinion about it. This demonstrates that he is just a puppet and can't think for himself. And as for Dustin Boothe, he had no right to open his mouth either.
Joplin may not have won against the health board, but the citizens won't give up. This fight is far from over. As for the person who filed the complaint in the first place, he (or she) should be permanently banned from our capital city. Bring Small Cat back!

Political playbook weighted toward pigs
In the Carson City playbook of politics, cats and pigs, it's a cinch cats lose.
I've never met June Joplin of Comma Coffee, yet I think I know her as a dear human of courage, conviction and truth who thinks her mouser cat, Small Cat, is just as worthy of a home as Arnold, the mayor's pig.
It is a little curious to me that a health concern is cited where Small Cat is concerned and a health concern is amended where the mayor's pig is concerned. It's just so curiously piquant, isn't it?
Nevertheless, the purpose of this letter is directed to the individual who first complained about and caused the banishment of Small Cat from Comma Coffee. As with the anonymous person who was behind the removal of the plain white cross memorial to Krystal Steadman on Highway 50, you and your ilk, as with your battles, are petty, insignificant and hollow.
You who fight such vapid wars make historical sounds akin to the snorts of Mayor Crowell's pig's grunts. We'd all be better off without your crusades of insensitive and stale pursuits. In the future, to all those boorish people out there, please restrain your pimply outbreaks and get some empathy.

Property is worth less, but taxes still increase
(Editor's note: This letter is addressed to Lyon County Treasurer Nikki Bryan.)
Dear Ms. Bryan,
I've paid my taxes faithfully every year but I don't understand the present bill. The appraiser tells me my property is worth 25 percent less this year yet your bill is for $20 more than I paid at last year's value.
This is not the way to curry political favor. The county should have to cut back like everyone else and spend less.

Little League coverage best in many years
To Darrell Moody, Nevada Appeal sports writer, I just want to let you know how much I appreciate you coming and covering the Carson City Little League tournament games.
I have been part of Carson City Little League for 23 years running now with my three boys and daughter, and have coached a team every year (I have also coached or managed several all-star teams). I sat on the board for 18 years and was president for 10 of those years. Your recent coverage of games was the best the league has received during that span.
Our league, by far, receives more media attention than the other leagues do in tournament play. I would venture to say that no other team has a reporter and a photographer at every tournament as we do. I know that everyone will not always agree on what a reporter writes in the local paper, but we should all consider ourselves lucky that our young players' names and pictures are often featured in our local paper. As a long-term volunteer, I sincerely appreciate your time and dedication to the kids of Carson City Little League.
