Empire is the scene of nightly street broils. The town is full of wood drivers who fill up with bad whiskey and give vent to their remorse at such conduct by knocking their more sober companions down.

100 YEARS AGO

Mars will only be 36,000,000 miles from the Earth, nearer than at any time in 15 years. Astronomers believe there is plant life and extensive vegetation on Mars.

70 YEARS AGO

A duck was hatched in a Lamoille refrigerator: A duck belonging to Mrs. Housewife became disgusted when something kept stealing her eggs. And when there was only one egg left, she deserted the nest. The housewife took the egg into the house and put it in the gas-operated refrigerator, just over the flame. She kept the egg there for five days and began to hear peeping noises ... the shell broke and a healthy duckling came into the world from the ice box.

50 YEARS AGO

John Felesina pitched a 3-hit game to lead his Giants to a 16-0 whitewash of the Dodgers in Little League.

Residents of a tiny 1870 mining town called Tuscarora battle a mining company. A Stanford University professor plans to retire there "if the town still exists."
