On whose dollar did Gov. Gibbons go to the Middle East on? At a time when jobs and wages are being cut here in Nevada, it seems to us to be a gratuitous ploy.

When you go to church this week, pray for the young soldier from Hailey, Idaho, to be rescued from the Taliban in Afghanistan. Pfc. Bowe R. Bergdahl needs all the help he can get. Wouldn't it be something if we all got the message that violence is not the answer? Will we ever learn?

Always see nice people at the Third Street Farmers Market. Also, discovered "wraps" made by a nice gentleman ... eggs benedict in a crepe, breakfast wraps, and lumpia (a wonderful Philippine roll) ... absolutely yummy ... as are many other goodies there (Molly Gingell makes a mean quiche and salad). You can sit in the shade, get fresh fruits, flowers and veggies (and many other things ... M bought a pair of beautiful earrings), and talk to all your old and new friends. Or get a massage or ride around with "Hoofbeats," and just have a leisurely morning. It opens at
9 a.m., and goes to 1 p.m. Try it ... you'll like it.

With universal health care being in the news every day, Mollie Sanders sent us this one from the Internet: "The American Medical Association has weighed in on the new Obama health care proposals. The allergists voted to scratch it, but the dermatologists advised not to make any rash moves. Pathologists yelled, 'Over my dead body,' while the radiologists could see right through it. Podiatrists thought it was a step in the right direction and urologists were p***ed off at the whole idea. The anesthesiologists thought the whole thing was a gas and the cardiologists didn't have the heart to say no. The proctologists, though, won out, leaving the entire decision to the a**es in Washington."

Congratulations to Peggy Ellen Smythe Bryant and Larry Wright when they marry on Aug. 2 (of course, Peggy, we hope you don't write a book ... you'd never make it past the autograph session ... your new name will be as long as Maizie's); and Happy Birthday to Janet Quilici Swobe and Clark Morres (one has lived much longer than the other ... snicker, snicker JQS). Also, FYI, Carolyn has lived through her illness ... a yucky week.

If you haven't been to the Dollar Tree in north Carson recently, you should give it a try. Not only are the prices good, the store is neat, the people nice, and the greeting cards funny (and only 50 cents each). They also have lots of other things that are very affordable.

Karen and Charlie Abowd (of Adele's fame) have taken up bicycling. "Someone" told us that she's much better at it than Charlie. Guess the Tour de France is safe for the next several years.

If you haven't turned on your air conditioning yet, it's probably time to think about it. Phew. Stay cool.
