NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say a body surfer has been killed after being slammed against rocks by giant waves in Newport Beach.
The Orange County Coroner's office has identified the man as 50-year-old Monte Kevin Valantin of Lawndale.
Jennifer Schulz with the Newport Beach Fire Department says Valantin was pulled from the rocks by lifeguards at about
1 p.m.
Schulz says he was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Waves 15 feet and higher have been reported at the Wedge in Newport Beach and a rip current advisory is in effect at all Orange County beaches.
