Questionnaires to assess hazard, risks

Carson City has launched a planning effort, known as the Carson City Hazard Mitigation Plan, to assess risks posed by natural and manmade disasters and identify ways to reduce those risks. This plan is required under the Federal Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000 as a prerequisite for receiving certain forms of federal disaster assistance.

Carson City began this planning process in July and is sending out a questionnaire with the August utility bill for public input. The city anticipates submittal of the draft plan to the board of supervisors for adoption during early spring and then expects to submit the final version of this plan to Federal Emergency Management Agency by next summer.

Public comments and participation are welcome. For additional information or to submit comments, contact Gary Dunn, Carson City emergency management, at 887-2210 or gdunn@ci.carson-city.nv.us.

Registration for Kids Klub Preschool

Registration for Kids Klub is ongoing at the Recreation Division Office, located at the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William St. Office hours are 8 a.m. through 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Children learn as they sing and move and talk together. The best way a young child learns is through play, and that is just what is happening at Kids Klub.

While the children are playing, they are also getting ready for kindergarten by learning things such as developmental skills in language, art, math, science, music and dramatic play. The child's birth certificate and medical records and immunizations are required for registration.

A $5 non-refundable registration fee along with tuition is due at the time of registration. Enrollment is limited. Kids Klub follows the Carson City School District calendar and will be closed during breaks and holidays.

MADD seeks court hearing volunteers

As part of its community outreach and education program, Mothers Against Drunk Driving is looking for volunteers to monitor drunken driving cases in Carson City.

MADD uses court monitors throughout the United States to record statistics on the outcomes of DUI arrests.

The courtroom process is an indication of how the law enforcement system is working and how the legal community is dealing with the problems of drinking and driving in a particularly community.

MADD's mission is to stop drunken driving, support the victims and prevent underage drinking.

Currently there are volunteers working in Douglas County courts, and MADD hopes to have monitors in all counties in Northern Nevada.

There is an application process and training for this volunteer position and there are forms to fill out for each case.

The training may be completed online. The time commitment includes being available during court hours, generally Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Volunteers can usually work out a schedule that only involves a few hours a week. If interested call 267-2687 or e-mail Linda.finch@madd.

Alzheimer's patients create need for care

RENO (AP) - Health advocates say there are 28,500 Nevadans with Alzheimer's disease, creating a need for licensed facilities that care for them.

The Northern Nevada Alzheimer's Association says Nevada is projected to have the fifth highest Alzheimer's growth rate in the nation among seniors, more than doubling its current Alzheimer's population between 2000 and 2010.
