Reno fire could put snag in morning commute; Highway 395 open

A fire that started burning early Thursday morning at an apartment complex was expected to put a snag in the morning commute.

The fire was burning at an apartment complex that is currently under construction in south Reno.

Police had blocked Highway 395 from Damonte Ranch to South Meadows throughout the morning, however the highway was reported open around 4 a.m.

Virginia Street in that area was expected to have delays this morning as fire crews go to and from the scene, Steve Frady, with the Reno Fire Department told KTVN Channel 2.

Flames were reported at more than 50 feet high. The fire appears to be burning right next to the freeway between South Virginia Street and Highway 395, Nevada Appeal Copy Editor Chris Sykes reported.

Nevada Appeal Reporter Justin Lawson said that people were watching the fire from the freeway until police kicked them off. He also reported some explosions could be heard.

A deputy patrolling the area said the police were called to the fire 12:15 a.m. The deputy also reported some power outages.

Flames could be seen from south 395 in the Washoe Valley, Sykes said.

No injuries were reported and no was reported living at the apartment complex.

Multiple fire crews, including crews from Carson City, were on the scene throughout the early morning hours and fire crews and investigators were expected to be on scene today.
