Not too bad for a four-year-old program

The Western Nevada College Wildcats, led by Coach D.J. Whittemore, finished third at the JUCO World Series in Colorado. Third in the nation ... not bad at all for a program only four years old. It was their second appearance there, too, during those four years. They also were first in the nation this year with a GPA of over 3.1. Scholars, gentlemen AND ballplayers - way to go, guys! Carson City and Nevada are proud of you.

Kress Whalen told us a joke she heard: "A blind man was standing at the crosswalk of a very busy street with his guide dog when the light turned red. To the horror of bystanders, the dog proceeded to lead the man out into the traffic. Horns blasted, people yelled, and by some miracle, he got safely to the other side. The people then saw him reach in his pocket to give the dog a treat. Amazed by this, a woman nearby said, 'How can you give that dog a treat after he nearly had you killed?' 'Oh,' replied the man, 'I'm only giving him a treat so that when I find his mouth, I can kick him in the a--.''' (if you belong to PETA or the ASPCA, do NOT call us...)

We see that the Sugarplum Bakery is going into the old Long John Silver's place on South Carson Street. That should be a tasty spot. Their asparagus quiches are to die for. Also, Dr. Jorge Perez's new Sierra Nevada Cancer Center seems to be open on South Curry Street. Welcome to Carson City.

The Weed Track and Attack Day is 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, June 13, at the Silver Saddle Ranch (at the end of the Carson River Road). Registration is limited to 50 people. Again, the birthday fairies have appeared: Jack Wyatt turns 3; and Steve Van Denburgh, Dixie Prather, Rudy Schmid, Don Rudin and Rhonda Brown do not. So there. Enjoy them while you can. We wish "Ma Tate" a happy birthday "in spirit" ... she would have been 88 this week. Carolyn and her sister, Nancy Gourley, just returned from a vacation to the seashore in California ... nothing but sunshine and abalone for them. We also send our condolences to the family of Patricia Brown ... we are sorry for your loss.

Get ready for the Carson Sertoma charity/fun golf tournament on Sunday, June 28. For information, call Frank Taylor at 885-7579 or 684-8532. Sertoma helps raise funds for children with hearing and speech problems, as well as cancer and diabetes. Good fun for a good cause.

We also have to make a correction: Lexie Lequerica made straight "A's" ALL YEAR, not just last semester ... mea culpa.

'Tis the time ... Sarah Kerkla ("famous Jake's" sister) graduated from CHS on Saturday; and Kirk Jesse graduated from the Nevada School of Massage in Las Vegas last week ... handshakes now cost $5 ... hugs are $10. Other news: Who said you couldn't be prom king and queen and not be brainy, too? Jeff Butler and Maggie Jesse, this year's prom royalty at CHS, were both named as Rotary Students of the Month (May). Congratulations to all.
