Utley's second homer of game beats Mets

Phillies 5, Mets 4

NEW YORK (AP) - Chase Utley led off the 11th inning with his second homer of the game, minutes after right fielder Jayson Werth saved Philadelphia with a diving catch, and the Phillies beat New York 5-4 on Wednesday night.

Utley's third homer in two nights came on the second pitch from Bobby Parnell (2-1), handing the hard-throwing rookie his first big league loss.

Philadelphia rallied from a 4-1 deficit in the seventh and dealt the Mets their sixth loss this season after they led by at least three runs.

Chan Ho Park (2-1) worked two scoreless innings for the win. Subbing for injured closer Brad Lidge, Ryan Madson got three outs for his third save.

The Mets stranded a season-high 16 runners, eight from innings seven through 10. Still, they nearly won it when David Wright hit the two-out liner into the right-center gap in the 10th that Werth caught.

Philadelphia is 6-3 on a 10-game trip, improving to a major league-best 22-9 away from home.

Giants 6, Diamondbacks 4

PHOENIX (AP) - Bengie Molina homered and drove in three runs for San Francisco and Brian Wilson struck out the side for his seventh straight save.

Molina hit a two-run homer in a four-run third inning as the Giants took a 5-1 lead against Doug Davis (3-7). Molina added an RBI single in the ninth.

Wilson struck out the top of the Diamondbacks' order - Felipe Lopez, Ryan Roberts and Justin Upton - to record his 16th save in 19 chances and lock up the victory for Barry Zito (3-6), who went five shaky innings.

It was Arizona's second straight three-error game and two of the blunders accounted for three unearned runs charged to Davis.

Zito gave up four runs and seven hits, walking four and striking out six.

Padres 3, Dodgers 1

LOS ANGELES (AP) - San Diego's Kevin Correia retired his final 15 batters during a sterling six-inning performance on three days' rest.

Correia (3-4) did not allow a baserunner after giving up a leadoff single in the second inning to Rafael Furcal. The right-hander threw 81 pitches, allowing one run and four hits with no walks in his 58th career start. It was the first time he had fewer than four days' rest between starts in the big leagues. He had four strikeouts.

One night after hitting four solo homers against Chris Young, the defending NL West champion Dodgers managed only four singles against Correia.

Heath Bell got three outs for his major league-leading 18th save.

Clayton Kershaw (3-5) threw 83 pitches over 2 2-3 innings in the second-shortest of his 33 big league starts, giving up three runs, five hits and four walks.

Astros 2, Cubs 1

HOUSTON (AP) - Geoff Blum singled in the winning run with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth for Houston.

The Cubs wasted a dominant start from Carlos Zambrano, who allowed a run and three hits through eight innings.

Miguel Tejada led off the ninth with a single. After a walk and a fly ball that advanced Tejada to third, Angel Guzman (2-1) intentionally walked Lance Berkman to load the bases and Blum lined a single up the middle.

Chris Sampson (3-0) pitched two scoreless innings in relief of Wandy Rodriguez to earn the victory.

Geovany Soto hit a solo homer in the second inning for the Cubs.

Pirates 3, Braves 2

ATLANTA (AP) - Adam LaRoche drove in two runs and Jeff Karstens pitched well in his new role as a reliever for Pittsburgh.

Charlie Morton was called up from Triple-A Indianapolis to start against his former team, but the Pirates right-hander lasted only one inning before a tight left hamstring ended his night.

Pittsburgh turned to Karstens (3-4), who was bumped to the bullpen by Morton's promotion. The former starter gave up one run in 4 2-3 innings to earn the win, snapping Pittsburgh's three-game losing streak.

LaRoche put the Pirates ahead in the third against Jair Jurrjens (5-4), driving in a run with a forceout. Jason Jaramillo made it 2-0 on an RBI single with two outs.

After Atlanta closed to 2-1 on an RBI double by Brian McCann, Craig Monroe scored from second on an attempted forceout to give Pittsburgh a two-run lead.

Matt Capps pitched the ninth for his 14th save, giving up a two-out homer to Garret Anderson.

Cardinals 13, Marlins 4

MIAMI (AP) - Rick Ankiel finished a single shy of the cycle and Colby Rasmus also homered as St. Louis snapped a five-game losing streak.

The Cardinals scored their season high runs on 18 hits. It was the most runs scored by St. Louis since Aug. 18, 2008, at Atlanta in an 18-3 win.

Brendan Ryan went a career-best 4 for 4, all singles, scored twice and drove in a run, while Tyler Greene had a career-high three hits.

Adam Wainwright (6-4) allowed four runs and four hits over seven innings to break a personal two-game losing streak.

Chris Volstad (4-6) allowed six runs and 10 hits over 5 2-3 innings in losing his third consecutive start.

Rockies 4, Brewers 2

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Troy Tulowitzki and Brad Hawpe homered and Jorge De La Rosa finally beat his old team, lifting Colorado Rockies to its seventh straight win.

It is the Rockies' longest streak since they won 11 in a row in September 2007, the year they reached the World Series.

Brewers starter Dave Bush (3-3) gave up a two-out solo homer in the fourth to Tulowitzki and three straight doubles in the fifth. Hawpe homered off reliever Seth McClung in the seventh to make it 4-2.

Huston Street struck out the side in a perfect ninth for his 11th save in 12 chances.

De La Rosa (2-6) came into the game 0-2 with a 13.03 ERA in three appearances against Milwaukee, where he pitched for part of three seasons beginning in 2004. Reds 4, Nationals 2, 12 innings

WASHINGTON (AP) - Pinch-hitter Jonny Gomes hit a tiebreaking RBI double with two out in the 12th for Cincinnati.

Jay Bruce walked to lead off the 12th and Alex Gonzalez reached when Ron Villone (3-1) botched his sacrifice attempt. Bruce moved to third on a passed ball.

Jason Bergmann got Ryan Hanigan to ground into a double play but Gomes followed with his hit to left. Jerry Hairston Jr. added an RBI single.

Villone gave up his first run of the season. He entered with 17 scoreless innings this season. Washington has lost three straight and 12 of 14.

Nick Masset (4-0) pitched two innings for the win and David Weathers finished for his first save.

The Nationals scored both of their runs after a 2 hour, 10 minute rain delay in the bottom of the ninth.
