LAS VEGAS (AP) - Southern Nevada health officials said Friday that an elderly woman infected with the swine-flu virus has died, the first death in the state.
The 70-year-old was a New York state resident whose illness was identified shortly after she arrived in Las Vegas, the Southern Nevada Health District said in a statement.
Officials said the woman suffered from underlying conditions that can cause complications from the flu. They did not release her name or other recent travel.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Friday that at least 45 people have died nationwide from the virus, also called H1N1.
The World Health Organization declared a pandemic this week, as its count of confirmed cases reached nearly 30,000. The organization reported at least 145 deaths.
In Southern Nevada, officials have confirmed 52 cases, the vast majority of which are mild.
Four of those cases were reported from an elementary school in Las Vegas this week.
