MLB roundup: Brewers edge Twins

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Jason Kendall's two-out double in the eighth inning tied the game, and he came around to score after two errors on the play to give Milwaukee a 4-3 victory over Minnesota on Wednesday night.

Twins starter Nick Blackburn (6-3) scattered nine hits through 7 2-3 innings and had a 3-2 lead when he allowed a single to J.J. Hardy. Kendall hit a ball off the wall in left-center and Brendan Harris' relay throw to the plate skipped past catcher Joe Mauer.

Blackburn, backing up the play, threw to third trying to get Kendall, but the ball sailed away from Joe Crede, allowing Kendall to score easily.

The Brewers, who had lost 10 of 14, snapped a season-high four-game losing streak.

Reliever Todd Coffey (3-1) pitched the eighth and Trevor Hoffman worked the ninth for his 17th save in 18 chances.

Minnesota took a 3-1 lead in the sixth on Jason Kubel's home run and an RBI double by Crede off starter Braden Looper. Kendall drove in a run in the bottom of the inning with a single to cut the lead to 3-2.

Angels 11, Rockies 3

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Vladimir Guerrero ended a 28-game home run drought and had three RBIs and Bobby Abreu drove in three runs with a homer and a double for Los Angeles.

Joe Saunders (8-4) allowed a run and four hits in six-plus innings, including a solo homer to Garrett Atkins leading off the seventh. He struck out six and walked one and improved to 5-1 with a 2.70 ERA in eight interleague starts.

Chone Figgins was 3 for 4 and scored four runs, helping hand the Rockies their second straight loss after a stretch where they won 17 of 18.

Jason Marquis (9-5) threw 88 pitches over 3 1-3 innings in the second-shortest of his 15 starts this season. He allowed eight runs and seven hits.

Guerrero, playing his second game since getting rid of his trademark dreadlocks, made it 6-0 in the second with a first-pitch homer after Abreu's RBI double. It was his 394th career homer and second of the season that ended a drought of 109 at-bats since his previous one on April 12.

Giants 6, Athletics 3

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - San Francisco's Nate Schierholtz hit a two-run homer to help Randy Johnson earn career victory No. 302.

Aaron Rowand added an RBI double and the Giants captured the season series with Oakland for the first time since 2001 with their second straight winning road series.

Johnson (7-5), who beat Oakland on June 13 for his 301st win, allowed one run and six hits, struck out six and walked one in seven innings.

After Jack Cust's single in the third, Johnson didn't allow another hit until Orlando Cabrera singled in the sixth.

Kurt Suzuki hit a solo homer off reliever Sergio Romo to go with an early RBI single for the A's, who lost five of six to the Giants this year.

Giants closer Brian Wilson entered with two outs in the ninth following pinch-hitter Nomar Garciaparra's RBI double off Bob Howry. Wilson struck out Adam Kennedy for his 20th save in 23 opportunities.

Gio Gonzalez (0-1), making his first start of the year, allowed 10 hits and four earned runs in 3 2-3 innings.

Mariners 4, Padres 3

SEATTLE (AP) - Franklin Gutierrez led off the eighth inning with a home run off reliever Edward Mujica, and Seattle won its 19th one-run game of the season.

Gutierrez seventh homer of the season barely cleared the wall in left. It was his fourth home run in five games this season against the Padres and the first allowed by Mujica (2-3) since June 6.

Russell Branyan hit his 18th homer of the season in the second inning for Seattle, a three-run shot that erased the Padres' early 2-0 lead. Seattle has won six of its last eight overall and improved to 19-13 in one-run games this season.

Sean White (2-0) picked up the victory working the eighth. David Aardsma pitched the ninth for his 15th save.

Kevin Kouzmanoff gave the Padres a 2-0 lead with his 10th homer in the second inning. Red Sox 6, Nationals 4

WASHINGTON (AP) - David Ortiz got his 1,000th RBI and Boston won for a second straight night in its first regular-season visit to Washington since 1971.

Ortiz and Jason Varitek homered and Jon Lester (6-6) allowed three runs and six hits over six innings for the Red Sox, who have won 16 of 21. Jonathan Papelbon got his 17th save.

Craig Stammen (1-3) was perfect for three innings for the Nationals, but the rookie threw a 3-2 changeup to Ortiz with two outs and two on in the fourth. Ortiz has 1,002 RBIs.

Varitek hit a two-run shot in the sixth to give the Red Sox a 6-1 lead.

Tigers 5, Cubs 3

DETROIT (AP) - Gerald Laird and Miguel Cabrera homered to help Detroit win its sixth straight.

Zach Miner (5-1), the third of seven Detroit pitchers, picked up the win. Fernando Rodney finished for his 15th save in as many tries.

Rookie Rick Porcello allowed two runs and seven hits. He walked four in five-plus innings.

Rich Harden (4-4) took the loss, giving up four runs and four hits in 5 1-3 innings.

Derrick Lee extended his hitting streak to a career-high 21 games with a seventh-inning single. It's the longest hitting streak by a Cub since Jerome Walton's 30-gamer in 1989.

White Sox 10, Dodgers 7

CHICAGO (AP) - Josh Fields, who entered the game in an 0-for-16 slump, hit two of Chicago's season-high six homers.

Fields singled in his first at-bat, hit a two-run, tiebreaking homer in the fourth inning and added a solo shot in the fifth when the White Sox connected three times.

The White Sox built a 10-3 lead, but the Dodgers cut the deficit to three on Matt Kemp's three-run homer in the eighth off Jimmy Gobble.

Bobby Jenks pitched the ninth for his 18th save.

Jayson Nix, Alexei Ramirez, Jermaine Dye and Paul Konerko also homered for Chicago.

Chicago's six homers were one shy of the club record. The White Sox last hit six in a game on June 8, 2004, against Philadelphia.

Gavin Floyd (5-5) gave up six hits and one earned run in six innings and got his first career win against the Dodgers.

Randy Wolf (3-3) allowed three homers in 3 1-3 innings.

Yankees 8, Braves 4

ATLANTA (AP) - Francisco Cervelli hit his first career homer to break New York's 14-inning scoring drought, and Alex Rodriguez came through with a two-run single to snap New York's three-game losing streak.

Joba Chamberlain (4-2) went 6 1-3 innings, giving up two earned runs for his first win in four starts. After Jeff Francoeur's two-out single in the eighth made it 6-4, the Yankees called on closer Mariano Rivera with the potential tying runs on base. He struck out Kelly Johnson and worked a scoreless ninth for his 498th career save and 16th this season.

Atlanta had pitched two straight shutouts, having blanked the Chicago Cubs in a makeup game Monday before beating the Yankees 4-0 on Tuesday.

Kris Medlen (2-3) gave up Cervelli's homer to make it 1-1 and then loaded the bases. Jeff Bennett came on to face Rodriguez, who was batting just .204, and gave up a two-run single.

Pirates 10, Indians 6

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Zach Duke allowed one run in six innings and Adam LaRoche drove in three runs for Pittsburgh.

The Pirates ended a five-game losing streak by scoring three runs in the second and six in the fourth. They finished with 14 hits against five pitchers, opening a 10-1 lead before the Indians scored five runs with two outs in the ninth.

The Indians lost their seventh in eighth games as Carl Pavano (6-6) gave up 11 hits and eight runs, three earned, in 3 2-3 innings.

The Pirates had four consecutive hits against Pavano in the second, including rookie Andrew McCutchen's two-run single. LaRoche contributed a two-run single in the fourth, when six straight batters reached base.

Duke (8-5) gave up five hits and one run in six innings to improve to 6-2 in PNC Park.

Blue Jays 8, Reds 2

TORONTO (AP) - Aaron Hill, Adam Lind and Vernon Wells homered in a five-run first inning for Toronto, which won its third straight. Cincinnati lost its fourth in a row and dropped two games under .500 for the first time this season.

Arroyo (8-6) allowed seven runs, six earned, and eight hits in 3 2-3 innings. He walked three and stuck out two and fell to 2-5 with a 6.82 ERA in nine career games against Toronto.

Scott Richmond (6-4) gave up two runs and two hits in seven innings to win his second straight start.

Rays 7, Phillies 1

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Matt Garza shut down Philadelphia's offense and ex-Phillies slugger Pat Burrell homered for the first time in over two months to lead Tampa Bay.

The win, Garza's first since May 16, evened the rematch between the participants in last year's World Series at one game apiece. The Phillies, who defeated the Rays in five games in October, won the opener 10-1.

Garza (5-5) limited the Phillies to Greg Dobbs' fifth-inning single until Jayson Werth hit a solo homer to trim Tampa Bay's lead to 2-1 and enable Philadelphia to remain the only team in the majors with an extra-base hit in every game this season.

Burrell's two-run shot in the second ruined an otherwise strong performance for Phillies starter Joe Blanton (4-4), who struck out 10 while yielding two runs and six hits in seven-plus innings.

Garza, 0-3 over his previous six starts, allowed one run and three hits in eight innings. The Rays assured his first win in nearly six weeks with five runs in the eighth.

Royals 4, Astros 3, 11 innings

HOUSTON (AP) - Miguel Olivo homered on the first pitch in the 11th inning and Kansas City won its second straight after snapping a five-game losing streak.

Olivo's shot off Jeff Fulchino (2-3) ricocheted off the railing in center field and bounced back onto the field. It was his 11th homer.

Joakim Soria (2-0) blew a save chance but got the win. John Bale pitched a perfect 11th for his first save.

Brayan Pena homered in the 10th inning to put the Royals ahead 3-2. Houston tied it in the bottom half when Ivan Rodriguez just beat the throw home on single by pinch-hitter Matt Kata.

The Astros took a 2-1 lead into the ninth behind Jose Valverde, but David DeJesus' RBI single made it 2-all.

The Astros trailed 1-0 before Darin Erstad's pinch-hit, two-run homer in the sixth.

Rangers 2, Diamondbacks 1

PHOENIX (AP) - Vicente Padilla pitched seven sharp innings and Taylor Teagarden and David Murphy drove in a run each as Texas snapped a five-game losing streak.

Padilla (6-3) allowed one run and six hits, walked two and struck out three. Padilla, who broke in with Arizona in 1999, has won five of his last six decisions.

Chris Wilson pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his seventh save in eight chances.

Arizona's Dan Haren (6-5) allowed two runs in seven innings but lost for the first time since May 12, a span of seven starts. He entered with a league-leading 2.23 ERA, and was riding a personal three-game win streak

Texas took a 1-0 lead in the second on Teagarden's RBI double and Murphy's run-scoring single made it 2-0 an inning later.

Marlins 5, Orioles 2

MIAMI (AP) - Hanley Ramirez and Cody Ross both drove in two runs and Ricky Nolasco had his fourth straight strong outing for Florida, which won its fourth straight.

Ross had three hits, including two doubles, for the Marlins (37-36), who moved above .500 for the first time since May 12.

Nolasco (4-6) allowed two unearned runs and seven hits in seven innings. It was his fourth consecutive start surrendering two earned runs or less since being recalled from Triple-A New Orleans on June 7.

Dan Meyer pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his first career save.

Melvin Mora had two hits and an RBI for Baltimore, which lost for the second straight night following a five-game winning streak.

Jason Berken (1-4) gave up three runs - two earned - and four hits in five innings. He hasn't won in five starts since being victorious in his major league debut May 26.

National League

Mets 11, Cardinals 0

NEW YORK (AP) - Fernando Nieve pitched six scoreless innings to extend his improbable stint with New York and recent callup Nick Evans hit a two-run homer.

David Wright tied a career best with four hits and Ryan Church had three hits and two RBIs in his first start this season as the Mets' cleanup hitter.

Evans had two of the Mets' 16 hits.

Nieve (3-0) won his career-high third straight start filling in for John Maine. He allowed three hits, walked four and struck out five.

Brad Thompson (2-3) fell to 2-2 as a starter this season. He gave up five runs and eight hits.
