(AP) - Gov. Jim Gibbons says gas prices are up as much as 50 cents from just one month ago in tourist-dependent Nevada and other states in the West, and he wants to know why.

Gibbons said he has asked his state energy adviser, Hatice Gecol, to give him a preliminary report in two weeks on the prices and what might be done to deal with the problem, whether through fuel conservation "or a request for someone in Washington, D.C., to look into this matter."

The governor added that Nevada needs tourists "and with these rising fuel prices, tourists may be less likely to visit Nevada, making it more difficult for us to climb out of the economic crisis."
