The Nevada Commission on Ethics has advised a Fernley employee who also serves on the Lyon County Planning Commission to abstain on any votes affecting the city.

William Cadwallader requested the advisory opinion from the commission. He is not only a senior planner for the city of Fernley but a member of the county planning commission and the Mound House Advisory Council.

Cadwallader said he would voluntarily resign from the Mound House Council if named to the planning commission. That, however, didn't resolve his conflict over being a member of the commission and an employee of Fernley.

Citing NRS281, the commission on ethics voted unanimously to advise him that when any matters affecting the city of Fernley come before the planning commission, he must disclose that he is an employee of the city and abstain on voting or otherwise acting on those matters.
