A fire broke out at the Railroad Hotel in Reno and in a short time the entire business portion of the city was in ashes. Among those ashes were the remains of five or six persons who perished in the flames. The fire limits were bounded on the north by Fourth street, on the east by the town limits, on the south by Second street and the west by Sierra street. The whole of Commercial Row west of Hagerman and Schooling's store was destroyed. One of the dead was Mrs. John Beck, an old German woman, known to all old Carsonites. One account is that she died in her cellar while trying to secure buried treasure.

Eras change. The Carson City Sheriff's Mounted Posse is different from the Old West image, but the horse and saddle is still important according to Captain Bob Parker. The posse was recruited during the New Year's flood two years ago. "And when we're in the park at the Rendezvous, the kids and even the grownups always want to pet the horses. You know, its good for the community to be friendly with the law. "
