130 Years Ago

A few mean acts are given as having occurred during the Reno fire. One is quoted when a woman refused to pick up a young child lying on the porch of a threatened building unless the frantic mother would give her a dollar which was paid and the heartless wretch saved the child. Some of the tramps charged exorbitant rates to carry goods to points of safety, while many freely tendered the use of their wagons without cost. To take advantage of one's dire extremity is a little more than to whip one's mother.

Mrs. Harold Berger entertained a number of her daughter Dorothy's friends in honor of the latter's seventh birthday. Those invited were Ruth Thom, Shirley Thom, Haroldene Brooks, Corrine Cavanaugh, Rose Mary Cochran.

Grace Bordewich, 88, died March 1, 1999. She was a descendant of a pioneer Nevada family. Her grandfather, Augustus Cutts of a 17th century Maine family came to this area as a government scout. He settled in Carson City in 1863 to become superintendent of the Vivian and Santiago mills on the Carson River during he Comstock Era. Grace Bordewich taught English in Carson City for more than 30 years. Her unequaled dedication to her profession left behind a legacy of hundreds of former students, many of whom credited her with affirmatively changing their lives.
