Fremont Elementary

an excellent school

This is the second day my granddaughter came home from her school (Fremont Elementary) upset.

She and her younger sibling have been attending Fremont for years now. In the interim we have tried other schools in the area such as Fritsch, Montessori and Mark Twain.

All seem to not be up to the standard of Fremont. I have attended and met the teachers at the other schools, along with the principals, and I must say Fremont is an excellent elementary school.

They have excellent teachers, and their staff really cares about their students.

When I read the newspaper this morning about the possible closing of Fremont it made sense to me why my granddaughter, who is an upper classman at Fremont, has been upset these last couple of days.

She will be going to middle school next year, but her sister will only be in the second grade.

After her experiences at the other schools before we placed her in Fremont, she thought of her sister having awful experiences, as she had in the others, and this made her very upset.

My granddaughters are very intelligent, especially the older one. She knows the difference between quality teachers.

It breaks my heart that our children have to be sacrificed for a budget. Something else has to be done, not close an elementary school to cram the children into overloaded classes, especially when Nevada is low in the country's standards of teaching

The 20 per class ratio was brought up. I think it is great that there are only 20 students per teacher.

Come on, we must stand up to these ideas being thrown at us by our legislature. They can delay the stadium being built in Reno, and keep our children's schools open.

I can think of at least five other choices I would choose before affecting our youth in anyway. They are the future of Nevada, ya know.

When the members in the legislature are considered our "elders" these are the children that will be running our state.

An ode to the times

In this growing recession it's time that we learn there still are people out there with money to burn. The question I'm asking is what do we do to get them to part with more than a dollar or two?

I have some ideas for my friends and my foes. Right now I am after those big CEOs. You really don't need $10 million to $15 million to set a big spread. Give back the bonus " help your country instead.

The country is learning to live on less " why don't you? Why drink imported champagne when domestic will do? Stop eating fish eggs and other weird stuff " no illegal Cuban cigars " enough is enough.

You furnish your office " no expense did you spare. Does your backside really need a 20 grand chair? Drive American cars, trash the personal jet " wear American clothes, did I get through to you yet?

Please excuse me if I sound a wee bit excited, I think some of those people should be indicted.

To the actors, athletes, the rock stars and such " the money you're making is really too much. The shelters are bulging, the food banks grow bare, you talk of cars, houses, fashion and the style of your hair.

"It's time to give back," cries a voice from the past. For to whom much is given, much should be asked. Give back even more? Now this one's a beauty " it will look like you're doing a patriot's duty.

And to our leader Obama, here's something to do " you can have struck a medal or two and give to those folks the honor that's due.

We'll have to give this new medal a name so those who will get it will have lasting fame. For giving back dough to the Red, White and Blue, I'll leave the name of the medal to you.

Grandparents thankful for coverage of story

My husband Wayne Gooch and I would like to thank the Nevada Appeal for the wonderful coverage of our adoption of our great-grandchildren, Timothy and Serenity Durbrow. We have gotten so many congratulations from all our family and friends. We are so happy you picked up our story.

We think it is really important to bring public awareness to the plight of foster children. There are so many wonderful children who are just wanting a loving, stable home " a place where they can grow in peace and security.

Again, thanks to the staff of the Nevada Appeal " you're doing a great job of keeping the community foremost.
