The Western Nevada baseball team continues to add to the win total, while the softball dropped two more.
The baseball team beat Southern Nevada, 7-4 and 2-0, while playing some of the best defense that Wildcats coach D.J. Whittemore has seen all season.
"Outstanding defensive plays kept the shutout in tact," he said. "They hit the ball very well, I think, and we were fortunate to win this game."
WNC (6-0 SWAC, 12-6) will face CSN (3-3 SWAC, 11-11) again today at noon.
The Wildcats scored both of their runs in the seventh inning during the second game. Mike Long hit a one-out double then Jay Skilton was hit by a pitch. Jerome Pena followed it up with a single to load the bases for hot-hitting Lance Ray. The sophomore hit a sacrifice fly to left field for the first score, then Brian Barnett singled to score Skilton.
"We felt like we had to play perfect to beat them and we did," Whittemore said.
Jordan Lewis picked up the win for the first game allowing five hits and two walks while striking out three in six innings.
Kramer Champlin came in for the save in the seventh inning.
In one of the odder stats for the Wildcats, Jeff Barto earned a save in 4 1/3 innings of work. He came in for Kyle Starratt in the third inning and had five strikeouts in the game.
The softball team was swept, 18-0 and 11-3, in its doubleheader with Southern Idaho. The two will play two more today at 1 p.m.
The Wildcats were held to just four hits in the first game and gave up all 18 runs in the first two innings.
