The State's Strong Box. The newly-erected vault in the State Treasurer's office, is built of strong solid masonry whose sides and door are constructed of chilled steel " as to defy the drill of the burglaries and foil even the designs of the most deliberate and skillful of lock openers " it is built from the ground in one mass of sandstone, lined with thick plates of iron. No less than $320,000 in twenty dollar pieces were in the safe, and stacked in the corner of the vault were great bags of silver coin, containing not less than $100,000. By this it will be seen the State is comfortably provided with something against a rainy day.

The Basketball Game " There was an enthusiastic crowd at the Athletic exhibition of the Carson Athletic Club in a game between the two ladies teams. Teams were as follows: Miss Lily Wright, Captain; Mrs. Harry Humphreys, Mrs. Henry Burlington, Miss Edith Jones, Miss Lucy Davis, Miss Florence Pohl, Miss Annie Kitzmeyer. The opposing team wore a white ribbon and was comprised of the following: Miss Josie Roberts, Captain (daughter of James Doane Roberts, owner of the Foreman-Roberts House in Carson City), Mrs. Clarence Painter, Miss Janie Mills, Miss Clara Crisler, Miss Louise Woodbury, Miss Hazel Hofer and Miss Ethel Hofer. The players were gracefully and beautifully arrayed in bloomer costumes.

Committee action in Washington to make Hawaii the 50th state cleared the House floor action. It is considered to have a good chance of Senate passage.

Former Nevada Governor Robert List met with White House and congressional officials to lobby for the job of federal nuclear waste negotiator. He said that he would consider any location for the dump and suggested "that Nevada should negotiate to get the most federal dollars." He said, "Wherever the site goes, the host state and local governments should explore every consequence of it coming there, good and bad. They are entitled to be fairly compensated."

Piper's Opera House restorers are asking residents who have taken artifacts from the opera house to return them. The opera house was built by John Piper and dates back from 1861.

- Sue Ballew is the daughter of Bill Dolan, who wrote this column for the Nevada Appeal from 1947 until his death in 2006.
