Nobody Asked Us, But ...: Friend's legacy: Enjoy lives and people around you

It is with sad heart that we report the death of a friend on Tuesday. Jim Lien passed away in Cathedral City, Calif., after his health deteriorated from years of kidney failure and dialysis. It has been an especially difficult time for his daughters, Deena and Shelley, for in the past few days they also lost their step-grandmother, Celia Wieprecht of Carson City, and a year or so ago, lost their mother, DeeAnn Parsons, and grandfather, Wilbur Wieprecht. Above all, Jim loved his friends and family. We can only hope, now the suffering is over, he is at peace and is "putting on a show" on that great stage up in the sky. If you'd like to remember Jim, please donate to a charity of your choice. And, as a lasting legacy, remember to enjoy your lives and the people around you. Our deepest sympathy, Shelley, Deena and Quinn.

Questions: Where were the campers this last year that say they saw Steve Fossett's plane stall in the mountains? Did these people just come out of the blue? And, if so, why now? IMWTK ... Wendall Huffman wants to know why we don't have Daylight Saving Time all the time and not bother with the "spring ahead, fall back" thing. (of course, now it seems to be "winter ahead, winter back") Are we all still milking cows in the a.m.? Finally, Jack Sypolt WANTS TO HAVE THE PAPER PRINTED IN LARGER PRINT (that's so he doesn't have to pony up for a new pair of glasses).

The Western Nevada Wildcats begin their home season at noon Friday, March 27 at the John L. Harvey Stadium at Western Nevada College. You are all urged to come up, see some great baseball, eat hot dogs, and cheer on the team. Happy Birthdays to Dorothy Tate, and her sons, Dan and Andrew Clinger (NOT twins ... but June must have been a good month); and get well soon Judy Lowther, who's going home today after a brief stint at the Surgery Center. It's hip-hop dancing all the way for her. Yahoo. Thanks to Sister Marie McGloin for the bang-up lunch the other day.

Maizie received a call last week from someone purporting to be a representative of a national charity who wanted to "come and talk to her." Immediately, red flags went up, so she asked "why" and he said he would rather speak to her in person. First of all, she didn't know this man. Secondly, she was not about to invite someone she didn't know into her home. M did NOT fall off the turnip truck yesterday, so she called the attorney general's office. Judy assured her she was doing the right thing, and transferred her to Dave in Consumer Affairs. He found the telephone number of the charity and asked to be updated if she found anything out. M called the charity and, after several searches, found out that the guy was legit. She then told them they needed to review their calling procedures. M called Dave and Judy back and updated them. They receive many calls from people who are duped into giving out information, so it was nice to hear that the man was on the up and up ... HOWEVER, it is a lesson you all should heed ... DO NOT GIVE OUT ANY INFORMATION TO STRANGERS, NO MATTER HOW NICE THEY SEEM (this large print was not just for Jack's benefit). Check with the great people at the AG's office (Judy) and Consumer Affairs (Dave) if you have any doubts. Above all, DON'T SEND MONEY OR GIVE OUT INFORMATION TO STRANGERS!

Penny Reynold's Carson High Culinary Arts group are winners again. Soooo, in order to help them get to Nationals, they are having desserts and dinner classes (for the dessert and dinner impaired) on March 26 (healthy dinners) and April 2 (dessert) from 6-9 p.m. at the CHS culinary restaurant ... $30 per class. These are great kids, and they need your help (you can also donate money without taking the classes ... but, you get to eat delicious goodies if you do "go to school"). Call 283-1711 for more information.

There are also some neat theatrical offerings coming up: The BAC Stage Kids "Annie" will begin March 20 at the Brewery Arts Center at 7 p.m. Call 883-1976 for tickets and information. Then, Carson Performing Arts (the high school) presents "Cats," one of the longest running musicals ever presented on Broadway. It begins March 27 at the Community Center at 7:30 p.m. (230-8919). The costuming and songs are terrific. Also, the dinner theater presentation of "Annoyance" begins tonight at the Carson Valley Inn in Minden (265-2942).
