Search for Nevadans who remember the Friendship Train

The Nevada State Museum has begun the "Merci Project," searching for Nevadans who were involved in the Friendship Train project in 1947 or have memories of the arrival of the Merci Train boxcar in 1949. On Feb. 23, 1949, a railroad boxcar full of hundreds of gifts arrived in Carson City to the fanfare of bands and crowds. The citizens of France had gathered the gifts and sent a boxcar to each of America's states on the "Train de la Reconnaissance Francaise." The treasures were sent in gratitude for food and clothing aid sent by American citizens on the "Friendship Train" in 1947. For information, email sueann.monteleone@nevadaculture.org or mary4merci@yahoo.com or call 687-4810, ext. 239, ext. 240 or ext. 241.
