RENO (AP) " University of Nevada, Reno police chief Adam Garcia says a police dog at the center of abuse allegations by an officer will be adopted by another agency.

Garcia says he hopes Niko will have a new home in the next few days.

The male German shepherd has been staying at a Reno veterinary clinic since Jan. 29 when the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals notified Garcia of allegations that Officer Scott Taylor had beaten the dog.

UNR officials have said a vet who examined Niko found no obvious signs or abuse or trauma.

Taylor had denied the accusation through his lawyer. He was placed on paid leave in February after a separate complaint alleged abuse on a citizen.

A UNR spokeswoman said Taylor's employment ended March 11.
