Carson High opened the Sierra League softball season with an easy 12-2 win over South Tahoe Thursday afternoon at Carson High.

The win gives Carson a 5-1 record heading into Saturday's double-header against South Tahoe at 10 a.m. at Carson.

Cassie Vondrak was a one-person demolition derby, going 3-for-3 at the plate and driving in three runs, while striking out 13 and allowing four hits in the circle.

"She threw a good game," Carson coach Scott Vickrey. "She hit her spots and mixed up her pitches. She is strong in the circle."

Carson's offense produced 12 hits " three by Vondrak and Megan Hein and two each by Katie McEwan, Belen Munoz and Daria Leid. Vickrey would have liked to see more of his hitters produce.

Carson took a 2-0 lead in the first when Hannah Shaw and Kristen Mattice walked with the bases loaded. The Senators made it 3-0 in the second when Munoz singled and scored on Vondrak's double.

Carson added two more in the fourth to make it 5-0 when Munoz singled and scored on Leid's triple. Leid came in on an error.

South Tahoe scored twice in the fifth, both unearned, only to see Carson score two more in the bottom of the inning. Carson closed out the game with five in the sixth, ending the game on the 10-run mercy rule.

Vickrey said he was unsure of his pitching rotation for Saturday, adding that Vondrak would pitch at least one of the games.
